I don't think I'm a computer dummy....but this Kindle Fire is no more useful than my B&N first-generation Nook....and worse than my IPhone.

In the first place, it doesn't come with any instructions (even online).

In the second place, you're supposed to be able to play videos....I thought that meant videos as in: You Tube.....or TV websites....or yidio....or netflix....

But none of those will work, not even you tube, because I have the wrong operating system....

Is the Kindle 8.9' one of those "proprietary" devices that won't let you access anything unless you buy it from Amazon?   Even though this was a Christmas gift (that I requested...it just took me a month to work up my courage to learn about it) I feel like I've been ripped off....certainly the person who gave it to me (my hubby) was ripped off.....

And it doesn't have a "real" USB port....I guess that means I can't do things like sync my Iphone 3GS or my MP3 player or my camera to it....unless there is some sort of adapter of an adapter.....

Can someone clue me in about this?  Is this the biggest rip-off in American history?  There hasn't been a single review that has said all these bad things about it.

Did you download the netflix app?  Because my friend has that kindle fire and she streams netflix all the time through the netflix app.  You can't go to the website and stream you HAVE to have the app.  I believe she also has a hulu app too.(she is a paying member of hulu).
I watched a youtube movie on her Kindle fire last friday which was through the youtube app so I know for a fact that works.

I very much doubt your iphone will sync with it though.  Would depend on what you have as your MP3 player is it an ipod?

USB- ummm it has a real USB port, it's just a micro USB which yes you can get connectors for.

BUT you cannot use it like a laptop, it's more like a media player.

Thank you all for being so helpful.  I have to go to a meeting tonight, but I will look at these when I get home.

I have a Sony Walkman, an Iphone 3GS (hand me down from my daughter) and an IPod.  ITunes won't sync to the Sony Walkman.

I used the Sony Walkman mostly for downloaded audio books from my library.

We use our 2nd gen Fire for youtube, netflix, and hulu plus. There are apps for all of those in the Amazon store.

If I get them in the Amazon Store on my laptop (which is lots easier to type on) would I have to go through a sync procedure like I do with the Iphone or would it work as soon as I turned the Kindle Fire on?

Once purchsed it should download to device...but for those that got hungup I tap the sync & then look under Apps/Cloud then DL from there.  Make sure under More you have excepting paas from different locations turned on.  Some of the ones listed in Apps Store are 3 party wont DL until the except thingy is on.
