From the dust jacket:

"It's 2:05 am when the telephone shocks Marni Verstak awake in her Boston apartment. Outside, Mt. Vernon Street is quiet. Inside, Marni gropes for the ringing phone. It must be a wrong number. Nobody would call Marni in the middle of the night.
"'This call is about Matthew's death,' the educated, rather formal voice says. Thus begins Marni's journey into fear.
"Marni thinks of herself as a competent and self-assured young woman. A divorced real estate executive, she has big plans helping some of Boston's ghetoo poor. She also has a precious secret: five-year-old Matthew, the son she adores and has hidden away from those who might hurt him.
"Only a few trusted people know of Matthew's existence...a few trusted people and, now, the man on the phone. He speaks of Matthew's death, but surely Matthew is alive and well at the Cermont farmhouse where he has lived since birth? The caller couldn't know where Matthew is, could he? But he knows other details, such as the pattern of Marni's bedsheets. Marni's fingers shake as she dials Vermont to discover whether her child is alive or dead.
"Marni is a survivor. She won't give up easily, especiall where her child is concerned. Someone is out to destroy her, wither for personal or professional reasons. With the help of Boston police dective Jake Murphy, who becomes a special friend, Marni moves toward some shocking answers."
