I'm awaiting the arrival of two books.  On my account page, one of them has a circle and check mark which, when I mouse over it, shows how far the book has travelled on its way to me.   The other one doesn't.   Why?  (or why not, as the case may be?)

Because one was sent via PBS postage and the other was not.  Since PBS issues the postage, they know where the book is coming from and the DC can track it across the country.  If the postage was printed elsewhere, PBS dosn't know where it is coming from or where it is now.

I print postage through PayPal and can track books I sent through my PayPal account.

Well actually it's buying the DC from PBS that lets you track it.  You can buy postage from PBS without the DC and won't be able to track it at all.

It means that one book was sent out with PBS DC (the one with the check mark, which you can track) and the other one wasn't.

You CAN'T buy PBS postage without DC. The USPS requires all printable postage to include it.

PBS offers two ways to "track" the book- PBS DC-only or full PBS postage which requires DC. DC purchased from another site or retail can be tracked on the USPS site, but not on PBS.

Keep in mind that only the scans listed are actual movement, that little truck is just a depiction of the estimated travel and will adjust to actual only when a scan is recorded.

Yup. what most people said! PBS DC will track it on the PBS Web site.

And yes, what Melanie said about the little truck. It's for our enjoyment only and by no means a real representation of where the book is. My little truck has been swimming in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans before!!

I wish I had know that, the first few books I sent out I didn't have DC with them and one went to the Virgin Islands.  I would have been nice to see a truck float across the ocean.:P

That is one reason I am willing to pay the extra for DC, so I can keep an eye on where the book is.  I know that it doesn't let me know if the book arrived at the person's home, but at least I do have an idea if it is in the area.

It's delivery confirmation, so yes, it should tell you when it has arrived at the person's home. Unless the mailperson fails to scan it upon delivery, it should tell you when it gets to it's final destination.

Plus...and I just discovered this after almost two years....if you use printable postage and the book goes lost you get to keep the credit.  I sent a book that was taking forever and when I checked it I noticed it had never been scanned.  I e-mailed the requestor, and told her that it had been mailed on the day that I marked it mailed and that I was worried that it was lost.  She e-mailed me back and clued me in on the credit insurance.  The next day she e-mailed me and told me it arrived.  How funny was that...never scanned until it reached her, and I believe she was in California (and I'm in NY)!
