I picked up a Virgin River Christmas at the library sale. I've been wanting to try this series, but IME, Christmas books tend to be subpar. Will I get a good sense of the series if I read this one? Or should I try to get the first one and start there?

I liked that book, but IMO it was not as good as the others in the series.  You don't have to have read them to follow VRC, but I highly recommend reading them because they are just that damn good.  I actually got turned on to the series because of the high praise for it by some of those in this forum, and they were so right!!

Willa, I didn't like VR Christmas as much as the other books.  It seemed like it was not really part of the series- the main characters were not any we had met before, and they weren't really connected to any of the other main characters, in either the books before or after it.  It was like the publisher came to RC and said hey, can you do a Christmas book?  and she threw one together.  Part of the charm of this series is that you get a sense of the community, and there is continuity with the characters across all of the books- except that one.  So I would not say that you would get a good sense of the series from that book.  Read Virgin River- and if you're still not hooked, try at least the next one, Shelter Mountain.  Once you've read those, you will have a very good idea what the series is like.

I agree with Dawn and Lesley.  VR Christmas was not my favorite.  I would start with Virgin River.  I am currently reading Temptation Ridge and loving it.

Lesley, that's pretty much  what happened. it takes place shortly before Whispering Rock ends because Robyn said she had already written the 3 books to be released feb/mar/apr..which is why the main characters in the Christmas book leave at the end and aren't seen again..she said they'll show up in next year's trilogy.

actually I enjoyed the christmas one because it was a break from all the drama and seemed focused on those 2 characters who pretty much were low-key...I enjoy the ongoing saga though but this one did not fit it as well. mel and jack always sh ow up in the other books and preacher is mentioned as well as paige but mike and brie from the 3rd book aren't as prominent..a LOT of characters get introduced and in the 3 she released this year stories are left hanging/overlapping, esp temptation ridge(the 2nd one this year)

it's a good series IMO and I plan to keep reading them but I can't imagine starting them anywhere but at the beginning.

I actually liked the Christmas book the best out of the series.  Just goes to show you that we all have different tastes.  :-)

VR Christmas was not my favorite.  There was some brief crossover from the other 3 books but for the most part it could have been a stand alone.  The rest of the series is on my keeper shelf - love them!  But I passed VRC on.

I share Sherri's opinion.  VRC is OK, but I'd not use it to judge the others in the series.

They're on my keeper shelf also, but VRC was not a favorite.

I guess I'll just stow it away for now and see if the first book ever shows up. :-)
