Darius, a Cyng of Hlahtar, has traveled to earth in order to meet his true love, a suicidal teen named Colene, and bring her back to his universe. But in proving to her that other worlds exist, Darius uses up the power of the artifact that would have permitted them to travel, and they must try a slower, more dangerous method: the creation of a four-dimensional universe. Darius picks five anchor points in five different universes to set up a skew path, a Virtual Mode, which the anchors can walk upon.

From back cover: Imagine a world where the clouds are made of crystals that constantly change their beautiful colors. Where joy is sacred. Where conjurers fly people from village to village. Imagine, too, that this world and more exist simultaneously and that it is possible to travel between them . . . VIRTUAL MODE!

Anthony's MODE series is every bit as imaginative as the XANTH books, but possibly based more on some very new, advanced physics theories, and definitely associated with some sadly real social phenomena. Colene, an isolated, desperate teenager in our current world, meets an intriguing man and has to decide whether she can let herself believe once more in hope--hope for herself, or even hope for the future

At first, Colene didn't believe the strange man she found lying on the side of the road. He spoke of a different world filled with wonder, was dressed in clothes she had never seen before, and knew a language she had never heard. He said that he loved her and wanted to take her back to his home. Colene suspected Darius was crazy--until he vanished before her eyes. Well, if falling love was crazy, Colene was now fully prepared to say goodby to reality--and hello to an infinite world of dragons and monsters and impossible dreams...

Interesting fantasy, but way too much baggage.
