This book consists of two books-the 2nd one is Listen to Danger by the same author. Voice of the Dolls is about a single woman, who paints flowers, etc. Her aunt thinks that she can't paint wild flowers as an artist because wild flowers isn't a profession just a hobby. Sarah had had the talk..she was 25 years old and according to
Aunt Florence, she wouldn't get an offer now. It's just too late.

Listen to Danger-Living in a block of flats situated attractively in a quiet London square. They could enjoy so many of the "fine" things. It would seem that comparatively they had smooth and pleasant for the tenants here but they still had problems, the small private longings, the lonelinesses, the impotence against fate, was no more in subjection here than in the poorest tenement area....

Voice of the Dolls written in 1950, Listen to Danger written in 1957. According to the dust jacket, in one, the main character is plunged into a seething maelstrom; the other, two characters are interwoven in a tapestry of death. I'll let you figure out which is which.
