In January of 2010 I was offered a WL book that was delcared lost and I went back on the WL in position #2. About a month later I decide to put it on hold and wait for the PB copy.  Well I'm not moving up on the PB WL very fast so I took the original request off of hold.  I'm still #2 in line but 9 copies were offered last week.  Why haven't I moved to #1 in over a year?  The book is The Hunger Games (9780439023481).

It's because you put it on hold. You get bypassed in the line if you have the book on hold. Now that you have it off hold, you should be getting an offer after the next number 1 person either accepts or passes on their offer.

You are supposed to continue to move up in line while on hold.  I have on-hold requests where I have move up to #1.

Donna--sounds like a glitch in the system.  If there were 9 books offered and you've had the book off of hold and been listed as #2 for that whole time, I'm sure you should have been offered that book!  I'd send a message to the PBS team and ask about it.

They were probably posted to people in line behind you directly to their WL instead of to FIFO.

I sent an email to TPTB.  Even as it was posted to the people behind me I should have moved up in line.  I think it's a glitch.  Thank you for your reponses.

It may be that the person with the #1 copy was also on hold.

I put Mockinjay on my WL very early so I came up to #1 pretty fast once the book was published. But I hadn't read The Hunger Games so I put it on hold for like 5 months and just requested it last week. I'm sure that if the person with the #2 spot was also on hold, she never moved up because I held the #1 position.

I agree, you should have moved up to the #1 spot while on hold...unless the #1 member is on hold also??  Actually, I thought holds were invisible.  If the #1 member is on hold you shouldn't see them, if not on hold they should have been offered one of the 9 copies.  A bit of a puzzle.

Maybe the person in position #1 has RCs that keep on getting declined.

The 9 copies could have then been offered to the next users not on hold and/or directly to specific WLs.

It could be that all 9 copies were posted directly to other members. Those still count in the last posted and I have seen it offered in some of the WL threads.

It could be the other member was on hold the  whole time too and is also just taking theirs off of Hold. Strange, but weird timing does happen.

It could be really bad RCs on the first person getting denied and the offer going to the person behind you. Or a combination of RC turn downs for #1 and postings directly to people.

I know I personally, with a super long WL like that, would not accept any RCs that weren't just basic "no smoking" "dust jacket" type ones.  So I can see someone with a crazy RC getting stuck at the top.  While deal with that when there's 1000+ other people waiting?

I also personally have books that have been on hold on my WL for probably a year now.

Donna, this sounds silly, but are you sure you took it off hold?

Did you put the book on hold? or your entire shelf?  I thought that when you put a single book on hold, you do not move up the list......

Hmmm...I always thought putting a book on hold just held the place in line, not that you would move up...I envisioned people leapfrogging over me since my wish can't be seen. The way it's worded in the help docs, it just says "You will not lose your place in line." So if I was #9 on the WL when I went on hold I would expect to be #9 when I come off, unless there are less than that number of people wishing. I've used the hold feature a few times, but 99% of the time I just delete them...I'm usually holding them because I have another source for the book (library, loaned from friend, bought it, etc.) so I don't know that I've ever actually experienced being, say, #35 in line and then coming off hold and seeing where I am.

Hold/UnHold:

  • Hold  (= an individual item hold, which is not the same as having your account on vacation) will "hide" your wish from the system so that you are not offered this book/it will not be auto-requested for you when it becomes available.
  • If you place an item on hold on your Wish List, you will not lose your place in line.  .

Truly, I rarely look at the # of copies posted, because I know that also includes those posted directly to someone's wishlist by a buddy or for games and such.

You move up the line until you hit #1 and then you get bypassed until you come off hold no matter if it's vacation hold or individual hold.   but that's only for the WL.  The Bookshelf works differently.

I still think that the 9 copies posted were to people in the lines after you.  It's got a long WL and I bet it's beign traded a lot within the WL threads on the various boards and between buddies.  There's probably someone in front with RCS that keep getting bypassed or who also had it on hold a long time.

Did you put the book on hold? or your entire shelf?  I thought that when you put a single book on hold, you do not move up the list......

For books on your Bookshelf:

  • Vacation Hold = continue to move maintaining your same spot in line relative to those around you.
  • Hold on individual books = removes your book from line completely and you go to the end of the line when the Hold is removed.

For Books on your Wish List:

  • Vacation Hold = continue to move maintaining your same spot in line relative to those around you.
  • Hold on individual books = continue to move maintaining your same spot in line relative to those around you.
