I have been requesting a particular older book and have requested it from3 or 4 people at different times and never get past the "waiting for member" phase.  How can I find out who really has the book and is actively trading and checking their accounts?

This happens occasionally.  Unfortunately, the only solution is patience.  There is no way to jump ahead in the line, although if the book is not wishlisted you can post your request in the Book Bazaar.  Wishlisted books may NOT be requested in this manner.

While waiting, keep in mind that you are helping to weed out inactive members.  After a certain number of non-responses, PBS admin puts the member account on hold until they check in.  If they are inactive the account is suspended.

Be sure you let it time out, rather than canceling it yourself.  By letting it time out (which will take a little over 5 days), the system will remove the book from the non-responding sender's bookshelf, place the account on hold if s/he has missed consecutive offers/requests, and pass you on to the next sender in line, if there's more than one copy posted.

If you cancel, none of this happens.  Instead, the book is placed back on the sender's bookshelf, and when you order it again, your order goes right back to that same sender, who is still first in the sending line.  And the 5-day clock starts again.

I'm in the middle of the same thing, Helen.  I ordered a copy of Crime and Punishment over a week ago.  The first one time out waiting for the member to respond and now I'm on member number 2.  It's frustrating, but it happens every so often, so just hang tight and know you're helping to weed out inactive members.

Thanks for your help - I cancelled 3 of them, what I have done is put it on the reminder list while I still have one ordered to get the next person's name and look on their bookshelf, open a new tab, cancel the old book and order from the new person.  I have never ordered from the same person twice, this way.  I think I left the first one on almost a week, does it automatically switch, or do I get notified.

What is teh book bazaar?  Even though I have had an account for several years, I have just started being active, so I am new to this.

It happens automatically. Some people don't accept until the fourth or fifth day because they need more time to mail. If the first one was there a week, it rolled over at least once. The only way to know for sure is to check the time that the sender has to respond and when it changes, you know it rolled over. You don't need to manage requests on PBS like you do on some other sites.

The Book Bazaar is another forum. Right now you are in Questions, but if you go back to the main forum page, the bazaar is further down on the page.

Hi Helen,

Sorry to hear of your troubles with the PBS site! I did read the post from another member about weeding out inactive members but I also wanted to say 2 things :) The first is that I am guilty of neglecting the site in the past. I'm a single parent and have a very busy 3 year old. Also, have you tried send a "gentle remind" PM to the members you requested from? I get alerts in my regular email when someone sends me a message here and it's jogged my memory to check the site more than a few times. Hope that helps and you start actually getting some books!

Ashley

I've had some time out too. What I find odd is the ones that time out on me are wish listed ones. They post, I automatically take it and wait, and wait, then it goes back on my WL (This has happened a couple of times and I have one now that looks like that's heading that way...she has about 8 hours left)

PBS sends the sender a reminder two mornings after the first email notifying them about a request if they have not responded to it. Since you can't be sure if the request has rolled over or not, I would not suggest sending your own reminder. PBS manages requests pretty well, if you let it.

I think this is likely due to the same phenomenon of weeding out non-active members. That WL book may have been posted days or even weeks ago. I posted 3 WL books a few weeks ago. One was accepted within hours. One was accepted by the third wisher (so it was 5 days before it was accepted, as the first 2 went the full 48 hours without being accepted). The last one went through I think 5 people, and took 9 days to be accepted. So even though you accepted right away, it doesn't necessarily mean that the book was just posted. I could see where a member posted a WL book thinking it would be accepted right away, and by the time it hit 6,7,8 days later, they forgot about it or were away and couldn't get back on the Site.

I was 1 of 1 on the WL for this book that timed out. That's why I thought she posted it the same day I accepted. I do know I have posted a book that had several wishers and it took forever to send to someone! It went through 6 in a row and the 7th was happy...she'd been waiting for 3 years for the book!
