In my opinion, one of LaMour's best stories. Gripping from first page to the very end. The characters, the plot, the way he interweaves history and makebelieve into a masterful plot are the definition of his later works.

Anyone who has read Louis L'Amour knows how discriptive he is in making you feel the same elements his character is experiencing. This is one of few that is not a western but rather a historcal adventure of the 12th century. I have his complete hardcover collection and this is one of my favorites.

NOT a WESTERN! But a well researched and enthralling story of 12th century Europe and Asia.

I found this book to be pretentious, but entertaining. If you are in to swash-buckling style adventure, this is your book.

A great epic adventure, very well researched in which the hero travels across europe and asia to find his captured father in the 12th century. My only wish is that L'amour didn't write a sequel before he passed.

Phenomenal view of 12th Century Europe, as only L'Amour can do. Read it a long time ago, and had to get it off PBS so I could read it again. So now, it's time for another to enjoy!

This is an excellent book written by the famous western writer Louis L'Amour. This time however, he meticulously researches Medieval Europe to develop a story of action, adventure, & love.

If you like L'Amour's westerns, I'm sure you'll love this change of pace. Give it a try!

At the center of The Walking Drum is Kerbouchard, one of L'Amour's greatest heroes. Warrior, lover, scholar, Kerbouchard is a daring seeker of knowledge and fortune bound on a journey of enormous challenge, danger and revenge. Across the Europe, the Russian steppes and through the Byzantine wonder of Constantinople, gateway to Asia, Kerbouchard is thrust into the heart of the treacheries, passions, violence and dazzling wonders of a magnificent time. From castle to slave gallery, from sword-racked battlefields to a princess's secret chamber, and ultimately, to the impregnable fortress of the Valley of Assassins, The Walking Drum is a powerful adventure of an ancient world you will find every bit as riveting as Louis L'Amour's stories of the American West.

Trying his luck at a medieval adventure kind of like it was a western. Not Bad but not great
