This book is quite lovely and written in the "traveling naturalist" style popularized by Rachel Carson and somewhat reminiscent of John Steinbeck's descriptions in some of his works. This book tells the story of the author's love affair with the Atlantic coast of the USA, and his reverence for the organisms that inhabit it. If you loved Edward Abbey's "Desert Solitaire", then you will be sure to enjoy Reiger's treatment of the sea coast from Maine to the Florida Keys. Bob Hines' illustrations offer a nice accent periodically to the themes being presented. They are line and shaded drawings, yet they complement the text nicely in that they are much as would be expected in a naturalist's notebook.
