I'm gradually going blind and having trouble reading a paperback book, "Dragonbone Chair."  I just started listening to audio books on my home theatre system, and I love them!   The trouble is that PBS only has 77 audio books in fantasy, and some of those are duplicates.  I did buy some (11) at our local bookstore, that had clearance audio books.  I searched google down to the oogle, and I can't find much of anything.

Does anyone know where you can get cheap audio books that does NOT involve a membership.  I hate those.  Thanks.

Have you tried your local library? Ours has it where you can reserve audio books online and then download and listen to them that way.

I second the library.  I get a lot of audio books from my library and from my mom's library in another county.  I haven't downloaded any yet, as I don't have an MP3 player, but I get a lot on CD and playaway.  Check out this old thread that has links and ideas:

I guess I am not making myself clear.  I want to own the CDs for myself to keep. In other words, I want to buy them.  I am not interested in downloading or the library.  Who sells cheap audiobooks that I can actually own, take my time, collect, and not feel rushed?  I want the hardcopy product.

Some Friends of the Library sales are fairly cheap.  I think I spent an average of $3 per audio book at my mom's library sale, but my library never has any at theirs.  I sometimes find some for $3-5 at thrift stores, but other than that I just don't know.  I think if you found some cheap downloads, you could probably burn a copy to disc.  I don't keep my books, I just want to listen once.  I have a lot of CDs on my shelf if you're interested.  Good luck!

OK, I gave in and went to my library.  I was surprised that they had a very nice selection of audiobooks (4,000), and I got one by Robin Hobb that was brand new, never used.  It's 42 hrs. long!  That ought to hold me for a while, along with the Kenyon book I'm already listening to.

Thanks for the help.  Psst:  You should have seen the look on my maid's face when she saw me sitting in my chair and nothing was on the TV screen....yet, there was this voice emanating from somewhere.  Spooky.

LOL!! I think I would have loved to have seen the maids face.   I'm glad you found something at the library that you like. It is hard for me to find audio books of things I like so I just use the library for more current and up to date things. Some of the other places I have found audio books are used bookstores, goodwill, salvation army for a reasonable price.

I've gotten some good deals on eBay, but beware - there are a lot of overpriced ones there.  The secret is to narrow the search (e.g. fantasy audio CD lot), buy them by "lot" and don't be tempted to overbid. Search often and be choosy.

A friend of mine in the unmoderated audio swap finds deals on audio books in lots on ebay as well, but I get so frustrated every time I even try searching.  I end up giving up before finding anything.
