My son and I have been reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.  We haven't finished it yet but I already recommend it.  The illustrations are beautiful.  It won the Caldecott Award in 2008 and was a National Book Finalist.

The wait on PBS is long if you'd like to own it: http://www.paperbackswap.com/book/details/9780439813785-The+Invention+of+Hugo+Cabret

Being that it is a Caldecott award winner most libraries should carry a copy of it.

My daughter read that for book club in 6th grade and really liked it.  She freaked when she saw the size!
