The War of the Worlds - Larger Print Author:H. G. Wells The Martians Arrive...The Surrey countryside was beautiful and peaceful as H. G. Wells strolled one day with his brother Frank. They were discussing what a disaster it must ahve been for the native Tasmanians when Europeans discovered Tasmania. To underline the point, Frank suggested, "Suppose some beings from another planet were to drop ou... more »t of the sky suddenly, and begin laying about them here!"
That "Suppose..." was the inspiration for The War of the Worlds. Wells took neighborhoods he knew well, in the countryside and in London, and depicted them and their residents under the onslaught of the creatures from Mars. He even bicycled about the little town of Woking, noting down "suitable places and people for destruction." It makes a vivid tale indeed; and more than that, it manages to say some thought-provoking things about our civilization and ourselves, by subjecting them to this ultimate testing.
