Chosen as the Federal Capital, at the end of the American Civil War. Washington D.C. is now a city of over 2 million people, many of whom work for the government.
Washington is one the American's loveliest cities, and it's site on the Potomac River was chosen by George Washington. He knew the area well. He chose a French man,Pierre L'Enfant to design it.The result was broad avenues, spacious squares, and attractive parks, with the gracious Capitol building as the focal point.
Today there is another focal point, the White House. The original building was put on marshland. The original occupant preferred a tavern. The present building is one of Washington D.C.'s landmarks, along with the Supreme Court, the Pentagon, the Library of Congress, the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.
The excellent color photographs in this volume illustrate these famous places plus many others.
