Water Stone Heart
Author: Will North
Newly divorced, Andrew Stratton lives in his head and not with his heart. He teaches architectural theory but has never built a building. He writes about "The Anatomy of Livable Places" -- communities where form and material are in harmony -- but has no sense of where he belongs. He is capable of deep, tender emotions but is unable to ...  more »

Water Stone Heart follows a narrative along the lines of Nicholas Sparks. The characters have horrible things in their past, face adversity and fall in love. I found the book to have too many characters that were not fleshed out. Although I didn't care for the book, a reader who enjoys a romantance story without bodice ripping would be happy with this novel.

I received an Advanced Reading Copy of Mr. North's new book and read it on the heels of finishing his debut novel "The Long Walk Home". The way Mr. North handles a story remains the same - beautiful descriptions of the landscape (this time, Cornwall), engaging characters who have suffered loss and find true love later in life, and interesting secondary characters. Mr. North's characters fall in love within days of meeting and readily recognize it as such.

I must admit that while I liked the story, I didn't enjoy it as much as his first novel. With this one, I found myself skimming through some of the narrative regarding the hedge building, witchcraft and the devastating storm.

Nevertheless, there is plenty to ponder here and I recommend it for readers of contemporary fiction and book clubs. I'm looking forward to the author's next effort.

I love that one of the main characters in this book is an actual weather event. I traveled to the UK and Ireland in 2009 and loved these countries. It was wonderful to read about an area I had recently visited (although I didn't actually go to Boscastle).

While I didn't get into this novel as quickly as the author's first book, I can understand the other reviews if they skimmed and skipped around. This man is an amazing writer, but, like an artist, you have to learn to look at the whole picture and be able to see it before it is completed. Read about the building of The Duomo and see the persistence that was required in building that.

Will North is a very descriptive writer, but there's a reason for this. He is building the story and what's going to happen, stone by stone, not building a wall. It may have helped that I googled the locations in the book, so it was like a travelogue following the characters and knowing the countryside, which ends up being very important in following the story.

I will agree that the two main characters didn't come to life as magically as in his first book, but this is an amazing piece of writing about rebuilding your life, not stone walls; however, those play a big part in the exciting conclusion as well.

Not a fast read, but a great book!

Charming, charming, charming! Will North has a way of conveying warmth even when his characters are unhappy at the moment. A very pleasant read that takes place mainly in the English coastal countryside.

This second book by this author, is also the second one I have read and I will continue to look for his books because they are thoughtful, insightful and well-written tales. This book captured me partially because there was an elephant in the room from the first page...a weather event that had not occurred yet, but you knew it was coming -- but of course, the characters didn't and by the time it arrives you are so invested in the characters, especially Lee, that you are breathless with anticipation. Good involving read!
