Hoping someone can give me some ideas....

We have a river and trail just up the road from us, literally walking distances (we have a ton of trails all over our area too)

anyhow, I was thinking of some science project involving the river and living things in it.

Any ideas, books, equipment you can think of to get started? Thanks!

Hey Mary,

We started with only a microscope and the kids loved it. We would take samples of everything for them to look at under it, and then we would do an internet search for more information.  I need to get the DK Eyewitness book about ponds and some other books to get more in depth but I just wanted them to have fun with it first.

How about getting each kid a blank sketch book and taking "discovery hikes?"  Have each kid draw three things they find on a hike, and then come home and look up what he drew to add facts under the drawing.  (It might also be fun to let them use a digital camera to photograph their items.)

We really like the Golden Guide books for research.  They're little, they're detailed, and they have color illustrations.  (Someone has a hardcover Pond Life one posted.  Check ISBN 030763535X.)

We read this one book about the ecology of a rivier.  It's called "A River Ran Wild".   A figured out how to add a link for the book.

I have a couple water books on my shelf.  One is mostly about percipitation though.   I also have the DK Eyewitness Pond & Rivers video in my list of unpostables.  :o)
