When I look at someone's book shelf, I want to see the books in author order, not in alpha order.  Is there any way to set this as a preference?

I don't know if there is, but I will be watching this. I, too, would love to have that as a default.

No, there is no way to change the default.

It defaults to alpha.  You do know there is a glitch that books without authors get dropped from the author list?  So anthologies, children's books, cookbooks and such get dropped from the author listings.  That problem is a major database issue as PBS mines other sites for its database.  We do not have control over how other sites enter data.  A quick fix for this problem is a default title setting.

I did not know that. Not having many or any books that fit that format, I hadn't noticed. I do understand that having a site like this is probably a huge undertaking. I just like to sort by author. I think it's the librarian in me.

I think the default is by alphabet for the reason that Emily stated. Because if a book has been added to the system without an author names (there a lot of listings like that out there) or has multiple authors it might not show up on an author sort.  Sometimes anthologies will be in the system with one or 2 of the author's names, the editors name or just a publisher listed. A lot of reference and non-fictions books have no author listed.

BTW: it's easy to edit book data.  So if you see a listing with an incorrect author spelling, no author listed or missing an author's name from an anthology you just have to hit the Edit Book Data button under More Options and submit an edit.  One of the Data Editors will get it and make the change for you after they double check that your edit is correct.

I also notice that a lot of times when lists are sorted by author, a book can show in the wrong area.  I've frequently seen J. A. Jance show up under the "A"s and Robert B. Parker show up under the "B"s for example.

I also like to browse by author.  But I'll check the different in numbers of books when I switch from title to author, just so I know if there is a large chunk of books hidden.

That sorting by middle initial is again, an data import issue. It messes up the search features as well.  Please do submit book data edits.  We need all of an author's books submitted with the same spacing and middle initial / name.
