This classic book by anthropologist Michael Harner is often credited with sparking the popularity of shamanism in the West. Having studied this animistic religion himself in cultures all over the world and as a practicing shaman, Harner introduces the ancient traditions to the general public. The author not only outlines the essentials of shamanism (drumming, dances, chanting, etc.) as they are practiced in various cultures, but also teaches readers how to become shamans themselves by reaching an elevated consciousness.
Incredible - yet so easy. Harner shares simple techniques to achieve altered states of consciousness without drugs. An invaluable aid to modern medicine.
a great book on shamanism how to.
Practical Shamanism in the modern age, as presented by anthropologist Michael Harner.
From the cover: "This classic on shamanism pioneered the modern shamanic renaissance. It is the foremost resource and reference on shamanism. Now, with a new introduction and a guide to current resources, anthropologist Michael Harner provides the definitive handbook on proctical shamanism-what it is, where it came from, how you can participate."
Very informative... enjoyed it. Highly recommend.
Fascinating book on shamanism, filled with personal anecdotes and history.
I found this book very informative for the novice. It gives a good overview. I would recommend it.
This is a great book that introduces the reader to a variety of shamanic traditions, as well as sharing some good stories from the author's experience. Throughout, though, there was something missing for me, something I still can't quite articulate. Something in the way he uses the term "shamanism" doesn't resonate with the fullness of what it is. His journeying exercises, though, are very interesting, and I have learned much through them.
This has great information for beginners.
