I received a waitlisted book and was disappointed that it was so obviously severely water damaged.

It was wrapped in plastic and the outer wrapper was dry, so this didn't happen in shipping.

I politely explained and asked for my credit back, indicated I was happy to ship it back if she also paid postage (after some discussion where she told me she would only give me my credit back if I shipped the book back at my expense) - and she continues to insist it wasn't damage.

Her proof?  She's sent over 274 books.

Well I just don't know how she couldn't have noticed this and want to send a picture, though it probably won't make a difference since she seems to want to be difficult about it anyhow...

You can send her an email (if she'll give you her address) with a picture.  And you do NOT have to return a book.  If she wants the book returned, then she needs to give you 2 credits - 1 for sending a damaged book, and 1 to re-imburse you for postage.  It says this right in the HC:

  • A requestor does NOT have to return the item in a "problem" transaction
    • if the sender wants the item back, he or she should send postage or a credit to pay for its return.

You could post it to a bulletin board or online photo album and send the link in a PM. That's about the only way I can think of to do it without acquiring the other person's e-mail.

Thanks!

I didn't think links could go in the PM's.  I'll do that.

Layne thank you for that, I did share that piece of the rules but she insists it is not water damaged.

Sending her a picture won't do much, since the way things are going, she'll probably decide that I must have dipped it in the sink after I got it.

I guess I should just let it go and lose the credit, it just feels so hostile.  I would never send a book like this, and if someone ever contacted me indicating there was a problem, my sense of courtesy would lead me to just return their credit and apologize.  I've sent out something like 60 books and this hasn't happened yet... I guess I would be more understanding if it seemed like people were out to take advantage, but I don't think that's the case...

Works for me--and shows the damage quite well. I sometimes puzzle if damage is water damage or not, but in this case, there is even a water line.

Thanks you guys.  Sometimes I have problems with photobucket and links for some reason.

Yup. Definitely readable, but definitely water damaged. Bummer!

Links are only clickable in PMs if you know how to do HTML. Otherwise you just past the link into the PM and she has to copy it out and into her browser's address slot. If you paste what you pasted above to make the LINK show, into your PM, it wll start with http:// and that is what she will have to copy to go to the location.

Thanks so much you guys.

The sender saw the book and now insists it was damaged in the mail, even though she wrapped it really well and I've told her the wrapper was completely intact and brand new, no way water damage like that could happen and the outer wrapper be pristine.

Ah well, I guess I chalk that one up to charity - maybe she's having a bad day for other reasons, I guess I've been there before.

AND just be thankful that out of 72 transactions so far, this is my first ucky one.  :)

Thanks again for your help!

Misty, I ran into the same problem a few weeks ago, and told the sender that I would put the picture on my profile under the "my homepage" link.  That way I didn't have to have her e-mail address.  I did that, and left it up for two weeks, and she never did reply to me or refund my credit.  I would wager a guess that she saw the photo though.  Anyway, my point was, that's an option if the person doesn't want to share their e-mail with you....put it somewhere in your profile where they can access it.

Thanks you guys!

And Lori, thank you SO much, I'm buddying it right back to you, but the gesture warms my cockles. ;) (I don't know where they are, but they're warm).

This place really is great, here I am whining about this one ucky incident, when everything else has been wonderful, and another member who didn't reply to the thread made the same gesture as you Lori - just proves that there are way more nice people out there than the occasional person who is not so nice for whatever reason...

It really wasn't about the credit... it was about how the whole exchange made me FEEL.  But these kind gestures way more than make up for that!  :D
