I'm a huge fan of any form of PA fiction... and have read all the classics and most of the modern stuff too. This book started out ok w/a nuclear attack and the characters trying to get to safety, but it quickly swerved into left field (if left field is where Alice went when she fell down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland).

I'm sure there were 'messages' and allusions and all that literary stuff in here that expound on western civilization and modern culture and all that... and I wasn't getting it (or caring). I was an English major in college and hated that stuff then too.

If you're looking for talking penguins, people who are robots with people inside, hats that aren't hats, and similar Alice in Wonderland type weirdisms... this book is for you.

If you're looking for a book like Warday, Malevil or Alas Babylon--where people struggle to survive a nuclear attack... look elsewhere. This story pretty much has nothing to do with radiation, starvation, etc... its all about putting the main character on trial (trial by penguins IIRC) for crimes against the world (i.e. not caring about the threat of nukes and capitalizing on people's fears). It was horrible... 0 stars IMO.

This book was a good read, but a bit on the weird side definitely. An interesting twist to the end of the world!

While the book starts off with a decent character and story, it quickly turns fanciful as people turn out to be robots, animals talk, etc, etc etc, it almost becomes sort of Alice in Wonderland-ish.

The entire thing goes so far off the deep end and I lost interest and started skimming it. Somehow I finished it... but I wish I hadn't. A complete waste of time and very annoying story... I know this story was supposed to be an allegory of soceity and all the crazy stuff an illusion for events/attitudes of people... but honestly I hated dumb stuff like that as an English major in college and now for sure don't want to waste my time with someone's nonsensical rantings. If the author wanted to write a book about society just write it and be straight forward.. don't veil it in a PA story.

If you're seeking a solid PA book like Warday, The Road, Lucifer's Hammer, etc... stay away--far away.

I think this book is most enjoyed by people who have a decent knowledge of Christian theology as there are references to the Bible and theological theories. (I actually found the author through one of those short story anthologies. I really enjoyed his "Bible Stories for Adults, No. 31: The Covenant".)

I thought little snippets are quote-worthy and funny but the overall story trite. It's actually kinda like the Christmas Carol for the apocalypse. We have the future people, called the unadmitted, taking the present people-in-charge to trial for war crimes... but there was a side trip to the past people (well, zombie/robots imbued with the memories of people in the past), called the invalidated, chasing down the present people in a mob.

Amusing, but don't take it seriously. Just a light, funny read.

I may be biased because I love acronyms. :)
