I was excited to read this book after I saw a mention of it on the Today show. I also remembered what a big deal it was that this very old lady went to the Obama inauguration. I was somewhat dissapointed because, honestly, her life really wasn't that extraordinary. The book is basically a narrative of her telling her life story, I would liken it to listening to a very old person go on and on about things. It is amazing that she beat adversity to be very successful in life. I thought the book would be more about the trials and tribulations of growing up black before the Civil Rights movement but really she didn't seem to have that hard of time. Though I do think it was her positive attitude of never feeling like a victim that made it easier for her. She was an incredibly compassionate person, that always gave to those less fortunate. I think her wonderful attitude helped her to live such an incredibly long life. I enjoyed the book for the most part, even though there really wasn't any excitement in her narrative.

This book was a quick, but interesting read. I agree with the reviewer who said it wasn't very exciting, but I don't think it was like listening to someone tell their life story. For someone who is 106 years old, it could have been a much larger book. It seemed a little disjointed to me and I feel sure that there were interesting events in her life that could have been told, but they weren't.For instance, I would like to have learned more about her "passing for white" on trains. There just wasn't as much detail as I expected.

Still, I would recommend the book. Mrs. Johnson had a sweetness to her, and a good outlook. And, like I said, it was a quick read.
