I just recently inherited almost 200 hardcover books from my grandmother who passed away about a month ago. Unforunately my grandmother lived in a home with two others and all three of them smoked heavily. So many of the books (including ones I plan to read) would be unpostable because of the horrible yellowing of the entire book. However, some of the better looking books have a bunch of dots only on the tops of the pages. I took a pic.

Does this look like mold to you? Or is it just cigarette residue settling on the top?

If its mold should I just throw these away and not even read them? Thanks for your help I am clueless!

Edited to add another question (and fix link)

Where do I find an ISBN number on a book club edition hard back book when theres no bar code or anything?

After looking at your picture I would say it is mold. De they smell moldy? It always has a distinct odor.

Could it be foxing?

Foxing: An imprecise term for spots, stains and tanning found commonly on the pages and covers of books. Colors range from brown to reddish-brown to yellowish-brown; shapes range from distinctly circular to irregular blotches or general discoloration; sizes range from tiny spots to stains (or tanning) covering entire pages. Most typical locations for foxing are on the endpapers, especially those in direct contact with the boards; pages facing an illustration, bookplate, or inserted newspaper clipping; and any area where moisture has been introduced and allowed to remain over time. Infestation can occur anywhere, however, including the edges of the text block itself.

Maybe that's what it could be! Because the spots are mostly only on the top, few have them on the side like the one shown in the picture.

And besides smelling a little smoky, I don't think they smell moldy whatsoever

Looks like foxing to me. Foxing is postable here. I usually try to reduce it with some light grade sandpaper and if it is severe I will PM the receiver and warn them about it if I am going to send a book with foxing on it. You don't HAVE to PM on postable issues, I just prefer to have happy receivers.

Regarding ISBN, check the usual places such as dust jacket, cover, title page (some publishers are trixy tho, so you might check all non-text pages).  If not found there, the book(s) should probably be posted without.

You might want to list the ones that are definitely unpostable and the ones that are questionable in the Book Bazaar. If there are any pre-ISBN books, there are lots of us here that are looking for those older books even if the condition isn't great.

Some Book Club Editions do not have ISBNs opposite the title page - they rarely have them on the dust jacket, if at all.  In that case you will need to post to PBS as a book without an ISBN.
