I asked this question in a previous thread about a book's cleaved spine/separation, but it's buried on page 2, so I thought I'd post it as a new topic.

Can someone explain what a cracked spine is? I use a Bookmate cover I bought from the Kiosk here, which holds down the 2 sides of a book at almost 180 degrees. Will this cause a spine to crack?

Removing my response because I did not understand the question fully -- sorry Linda :-)

No, the BookMate is not too small. It fits a standard, mass-market paperback book sized up to 4-1/4" wide x 7-1/4" high. It holds a PB open with a plastic strip that runs across the opened pages and snaps on the side. Please see these pics: http://img.makeupalley.com/5/5/9/4/1045737.JPG and http://img.makeupalley.com/5/5/9/4/1045738.JPG

It holds down the 2 sides of a book at almost 180 degrees. When I first started using it, I was concerned that it would put a lot of stress on the spine. But I thought since it's being sold here at PBS, it must be okay to use. Any thoughts from other BookMate users?

When you use your Bookmate make sure that you only put the back cover into the flap.  If you put in both covers, I'm sure that it could damage your books.

When I got my first Bookmate I hated it, until I looked at the directions!  It is designed to be used with only one cover under the flap.  I guess I thought that I was smart enough to use it with out even looking at the pictures . . . lol.  I've never had a problem since I stared to use it correctly.  It can be awkward at first, but now I LOVE my Bookmate!

Yes, only the back cover goes into the flap. But that plastic strip going across the book still holds both sides down almost flat -- that's what I'm concerned about, whether that places too much stress on a book's spine.

I've never had a problem with it.  IT hasn't cracked or cleaved any of my books.

This is a cleaved spine: http://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h125/mannythepoolshark/damaged%20books/?action=view&current=scan0002-3.jpg

I have been using my bookmate for two years and havent had a problem with it damaging books and I *gasp* put both covers in cause if I just put one it wants to fall out.

Okay, I feel better now. I do like the BookMate -- I never realized how tiring it was for my fingers when I used to use a traditional cloth book cover.
