I've been trying to put a bunch of books on my WL that have been on Amazon and BN.com for several days. These are all books that come out early 2010. Normally, once a book shows up on Amazon, PBS usually recognizes it in the system after 24 hours so I can add it to my list. However, I've been trying for days, even weeks for some of these books to get into the system and it's just not happening. I've made sure to put it for All books listed, and it doesn't change. Every morning I check about 5 books and still nothing. There's about 20 I'm trying to add, so it seems pretty weird that it's such a high number that's not being able to get added.

How much info does PBS need to put the ISBN in the system?

I've noticed that lately too--even my trick of adding the book to my TBR and then accessing from there to add to my WL doesn't work. I get the "this is a valid ISBN but it's not in our database" message. Maybe there is a glitch in the syncing/updating of the database from Amazon or whatever PBS uses?

I don't believe PBS manually adds things, they rely on their databases from other places. They can make corrections to an existing ISBN but I don't think they enter primary data that way except as a book without an ISBN or something. Not sure about that though.

I've noticed this as well.  Doesn't make me happy.  But I guess it's a small thing.  Wonder if we could ask the PBS team about this?

I add those ISBN's manually to my bookshelf one-by-one, deleting them immediately, and then putting the ISBN on my WL. There's generally enough data at Amazon (including cutting-and-pasting the book synopsis into the description field) to do that.

I had this happen yesterday with two books I just received from the UK and wanted to add to my TBR. Both were on Amazon(the US version) but did not come up in the PBS system. Since it recognized them as valid ISBN's, and I had the books to hand, I just entered them in manually. I get a kick out of adding data and images anyway,  my honey says I'm trying to organize the world.LOL

Debra -

If we don't add them, I can see those being added with 5-digit numbers later, which makes things much worse.

what about books that are out that aren't in PBS?  I was just looking today for "Beauty Pearls for Chemo Girls" for an aunt about to under go chemo, and it's not in PBS.  But it's for sale at Amazon....

Debra, adding the ISBN of already released books (UK or otherwise) should work fine.

Otherwise, I'd like a tourguide's opinion for adding the ISBN for books not yet released.  Until they are legitimately available at PBS, I would discourage manually adding upcoming releases....either regular or short ISBN.  Off the top of my head, I can think of several upcoming releases that are already incorrectly listed here at PBS - with waitlists.  Whether short ISBN, or incorrect ISBN (how did that get in the system?) there are hundreds of PBS members doomed to disappointment because they are unknowingly on a wrong wishlist that just isn't going to move.  Patience certainly isn't one of my virtues, but may be the best option in these cases.

And yes, at the moment I have several of these on my 'Saved Searches' list just waiting until the real ISBN is available to wishlist :-(

ETA - I've heard Cheryl's method works well to pull ISBN's into the system...somehow that apparently identifies and imports the correct ones...or it used to.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one having this issue lately, it has been really frustrating me!  It used to be that as long as an ISBN was on Amazon, you could "force" it into PBS system easily, all the usual tricks just aren't working lately.  Guess PBS's database is just not keeping up with all of us trying to score that #1 spot:)

Tricia, the Hard Cover version of that book is on PBS - ISBN 9781600590375 with a short WL line. The paperback isn't suposed to be out until September, not sure why it isn't showing up in PBS yet.

OK, saw another post on this subject that suggested using Advanced Search and entering the ISBN.  If it doesn't come up, try again an hour later and often the book will be available at PBS.

There are several upcoming releases I'm watching for, but none that are showing an ISBN at Amazon yet...anyone have an ISBN they'd like to try?

Anyone want to contact TPTB and ask what's up?  See if this is temporary?

I sent them a message about something else, and I included a question about this. I'll keep you posted ;)

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing when I was first looking for the book.  In fact, that reminds me to go take it off my wish list!

Glad to see I'm not the only one.

And w/ manually entering not yet released books...I can't seem to enter any w/ 2010 release dates, so that doesn't work for my books.  I tried to post it to the system...didn't work.  Getting really frustrating.

They are aware there is a problem and they're working on fixing it as quickly as they can.

Thanks for the update Lori  :  )

I read somewhere else that amazon changed some of their database programming. I wonder if there is now some sort of interface type thing that TPTB need to reprogram....
