I was on the PBS home page a few days ago and saw a book I really wanted had just been posted.  I immediately ordered it (this was on the 31st).  This is the only copy in the system. The book hasn't yet been accepted, so I clicked on the "order more books" tab to see how long the person had been a member, if I could get a feel for how active their account is, etc.  To my dismay, the sender has no books on her shelf or wishlist.

Uh oh.  On the plus side - she just posted the book on the 31st.  On the negative side - the book is a pretty obscure, non-wishlisted book that she may have thought would have sat on her shelf for a bit.

I'm really hoping she logs on and sees that I have ordered it.  If it times out, do you have any suggestions for what i can do?  Will it be added to my WL?

It will be added to your wishlist. I have had that happen to me too and it makes one want to scream, doesn't it?!?! But let's be optomistic!!!

Cat - I couldn't tell if the person was new as they didn't have a home page and there was no other data to go on.

If the book didn't end up on your WL then it was sent to the member who listed it and if it was accepted it wouldn't appear on her bookshelf or your WL while it's in the "Process Limbo".  Do you see where you requested it and what does it show?  If it times out - at least you know who it is that has it and you could PM them after it times out.

It hasn't timed out yet.  I'll send the member a PM when it does - I'll be able to see their info via the transaction record.

I have had such a run of bad luck recently!

Funny--something similar happened to me this week.  On April 1st I was doing the "author check" of my wishlist, where you click on authors to see if other versions of wishlisted books are in the system.  One of mine was, and it's also a rather obscure book--so I ordered it.  I looked at the member's bookshelf to see what else they had and there were no books listed, no wishlist, no profile!  I thought, what are the chances that this person just posted her very first book into the system and I found it seconds later?   But--it was accepted and printed on April 2nd.  I just looked at their list again, and still no other books posted, so it wasn't a brand new member just starting to post (or else the instant order scared her away from posting more books!)  Mine hasn't been mailed yet, but I'm hopeful that it will be.

And hopefully yours will be mailed as well!

Could it be that the member has her account on HOLD so that no books show up on her account?
She/He is only posting if they find a book to post that is wishlisted?

The account is not on hold.  There are simply no books on her shelf/WL.

Isn't there an option to make your bookshelf and your WL private?

I found the answer to my question. Yes, you can choose to make your BS private. Go to your settings and then at the top pf the page you will see "Privacy Controls" hyperlinked. Look where is says "Lists"

Lists

Allow others to see a list of my book reviews.

Allow others to see my Bookshelf.

Allow others to see my Wish List.

Allow others to see number of books I've received.

Allow others to see number of books I've sent.

That was my thought, that the person does have things listed but has the privacy controls on.  I think that even though you can't see anything the member does know you've requested it and could just be waiting as long as possible.  Could only have computer access during the week too.  Or a problem with the computer.  I've had minor prooblems with mine for the past week.

That's really not it:

"This member currently does not have any books posted in the system."

"This member currently does not have any books on their Wish List."

It's timing out in a few hours.  Sigh.

So, my poor book timed out and rolled over into my wishlist.  But - another member PM'd me and offered to take a look at another swapping site she belongs to - which:  SO INCREDIBLY NICE!

With all these books timing out, and the repeated book damage drama, I think the fates are telling me that I already have way too many books to read, not to mention PILES of work related reading to do.  I read applications for a large arts organization and I have 100+ projects to go through over the next couple of weeks, so - I really should hold up on the book ordering. :~)

Another thought--someone who has no books on their shelf might be a pretty active swapper but generally only posts wish list books.  Someone could post numerous WL books, and they would never show up on their shelf.

If the member's bookshelf was private or on vacation hold it would tell you that when you tried to go there.  Otherwise, it's just that they have nothing there and probably they only post WL books ever.  There are some members who do that.  So now that it's on your WL - if you're #1 on the list - you may get it.

Miranda sez:

<<Yes, you can choose to make your BS private.>>

Sorry, this just made me giggle. Yes, please do keep all your "BS" to yourselves :-)

It is worth mentioning that there are members whom, for whatever reason, have all the books they want (is this really possible?) and/or just sell back credits, hence they have no WL.  Some of these folks are academic types who occasionally get unique titles like yours.  Hopefully you'll get a copy soon :-)

Cheers,

Catt
