Used to be, back when the site was free that because I clicked the little remember me button PBS would do just that.  Whether I closed my browser or even turned off the computer I was logged in.  Then once every so often, maybe every few weeks I would get the login page and have to log in.

Ever since the BFHND in February now pretty much I have to log in all the time, heck sometimes twice in the same day, if I close my browser or my WiFi blinks off boom I have to sign back in!  What gives.

I'll grant you it isn't the worst glitch, but it seems to have been the longest-running one, and It's annoying.  It seems like I am getting less and less for my membership not more or better.

I'm not having that problem (fortunately).  I still stay logged in for a few weeks at a time.  Don't know why you have to keep signing in. That would be a royal pain.

Works fine for me too. Auto-logins typically fail for the following reasons:

  • Cookies were deleted since last time you logged in, either by a browser security setting or a 3rd party browser add-in or cleanup tool.
  • Using the "in private" feature of your browser.
  • Using different logins on the same computer. Cookies are not shared across user accounts.
  • Using different browsers. Cookies are not shared across multiple browsers.

There might be something else going on, but these are the first things I usually check when somebody asks for help with a "remember me" issue at any site.

I've not had a problem either. I log in from "MY ACCOUNT" page and not the "HOME" page. Could this be the difference? Pat

I never could get "remember me" to work on my iPad but one day it started working.  I go to PBS and wait a few seconds for it to fill in my username and password then I click "login".  I don't remember what I did to get the ball rolling.

Just happened AGAIN, only this time I was logged on, in the forums and I had to re-log in to submit a comment.

argh.

Works fine for me too. Auto-logins typically fail for the following reasons:

Well... I have always used this browser, Chrome and all the settings are the same as they have always been.  I never use a different browser, cookies are enabled, I never use incognito and even if I did you have to do it manually each time you can't just set it and let it be that way.  No one else uses PBS just me.

This has never been an issue until maybe the end of February or beginning of March of this year and just seems to get worse as time goes on.

I guess the next time it happens I'll contact tptb, but if this isn't a majority issue I doubt any good will come of that.

Just ticks me off.

Thanks for the suggestions and in put though.  lol

I don't have it happen on the computer, but it always happens now on my iPad/iPhone.  I have my devices set to autofill and remember password through the iCloud keychain so it's not that big a deal but it is a change from the first several years I used those devices with this site.

It has never worked that way for me, but I know it is my privacy settings.  If I click on the Remember Me, then it will retain my user name but I always have to put in my password - this is all sites, not just PBS.   For me, if a 2nd tab for the same site has 'gone stale', it will work by just doing a hard refresh rather than having to log in again - ymmv.

I sent in feedback about it today, I doubt it will help but I felt I should try.  I expect I'll get a form letter in return with helpful suggestions on how to fix it, basically all the tips I've been given here, which I already addressed in my feedback.  it is what it is.

Yeah, if you tried everything I mentioned above, it's very unlikely that PBS would be able to help without being able to look directly at your computer and browser settings. They can see what your browser sends to their servers, but they can't see how your browser decided what to send. For some reason, the cookie is not there or not formatted correctly when your browser sends data to PBS. Likewise, I'm sure I could fix it if I had your computer in my hands, but I don't know what else to recommend from a distance.

One interesting note about my response from TPTB... they say that you are automatically logged out after 30 minutes.  Since when?  I know back in the day I could spend more than 30 minutes just reading a thread in CMT and not be logged out, now I can get logged out going from one post to another.  There was a time not so long ago, that as long as I left the browser window up I was logged in, regardless of how long before I came back to it.  When my grandchildren were babies there were a lot of times I'd be back and forth over the course of the day, but never got logged off.  When did this change?

I just wonder those who spend any significant time on here, how often during your time on pbs do you get logged out?

by logged out I mean either getting the log in screen to enter name and password (even if yours are always remembered by your browser) or find yourself in the forum and no way to post and have to go back to the login screen?

Guinan, I think they mean 30 mins. with no activity.  If you are checking stuff or posting, then it keeps updating - at least that's my experience.

I had the same problem for a few months in the spring, if I left the computer for a few minutes, I would be logged out of PBS and sometimes I was on here for 2 straight hours or multiple times a day.  the problem magically resolved itself, but now that I'm out of state helping with daughter's new baby and only getting on here every other day, it seems to require me to sign on each time.

I'm sure that is what they mean, I'm just saying that's bologna.  I tend to leave my laptop on all day and tabs with PBS, Goodreads, Facebook and any other pages I might be on or saving to use later and I walk away from it often.  Case in point, today for some reason I have yet to be asked to log on.  I opened my laptop around noon and because it was on hibernate not off totally my pages from last night were brought up including PBS.

I am just now actually getting to look at PBS, and have yet to be asked to log on, yet yesterday I was getting it every time I moved from this forum to CMT or if I had to leave the laptop for a few minutes.

So there is obviously some kind of issue with their software that occasionally makes the log in requirement 10 x often.

I only have to re log in when I update Firefox. Otherwise, I stay logged in until I clear out all my cookies.  I don't leave a PBS window open, I bop around to different sites and then back to PBS.

Still logged in... PBS tab has been open since noon, this is my first actual activity.

So much for having to log in every 30 min.  I'm assuming whatever glitch was having me log in at irregular times has been fixed.  yay!

I put "My Account' page on my favorites tab and never have to log in.

... and we're back to logging in every time.  *sigh*

I really don't know why I care anymore.
