I haven't had any strange requests yet... just wondering if mine are too picky. But I am curious if there's been any outlandish or odd conditions.

Nothing beyond adversions to smoke and pets.

Not really an odd requestor condition, but I had a request that the book not be wrapped in plastic before being wrapped in paper to be shipped. It was no problem, so I accepted the request. But I did PM the requestor to ask, out of curiousity, why she had the condition. Turns out she has arthritis in her hands and can't open Saran Wrapped packages very easily.

I had one come up once that asked that the book meet PBS guidelines and be in good condition.  I just figured they had gotten a few too many unpostables or something.

I had one that requested no books with "urine smells or stains!"

I've actually received a book that had a yellow stain and reeked of urine, so I can totally understand that requestor condition!

Not really strange but I had one come in wanting only "new, near mint condition books".  It was for a 15yr old OOP/HTF romance paperback with 80+ WLers. I passed on it even though the book was in excellent condition.  No way was a I risking that one.

I had one that suggested that hardcovers be wrapped in bubble wrap to protect the corners.  They ordered a paperback from so it didn't pertain to our transaction.  If it was a hardback, I would have turned it down if I didn't have bubble wrap handy. I would not have got out special to buy bubble wrap to mail the book.

My strangest one was actually a very long statement about how they loved PBS and was so happy to get books and happy swapping.  It was actually kinda cool  :)

My RC is just a reinteration of PBS guidelines-- and as the poster above guessed, it was due to receiving numerous unpostables. However, oddly enough, I still have to mark a few RWAP.

The oddest RC I've seen is one requesting that the book be in "new condition"... I had to pass it up, as all the books on my shelf have been read at least once-- just shipping it would've been risky!

That the book have no creases in the cover and no dog earred pages.    I sent the book because it did meet the conditions.

I had one that read that the book must be in English.  LOL  That one really had me scratching my head.  I did send the book of course.

I have turned down several that request new or mint condition. Even when I am listing a new book, I am not going to take a chance.

ETA: I will always turn down such conditions

I have gotten a couple with the 'new to mint condition' request...I did go ahead and send the booksas they were books I'd bought for myself so had only been read once. I try to judge each request on its own merit, but the ones that cheese me off even more than people wanting 'like new' books are the ones that simply reiterate the PBS posting guidelines. Yeah, I get that some people get a lot of unpostable books, but those type of conditions are insulting, IMO.

I can't say I've gotten any really weird ones, though. Lots of "no ex-library" 'not in a smoking environment" etc. And a couple from people with arthritis who requested not to have plastic wrap or have the book completely covered in tape. There were a couple that were so long and wordy and what I read was confusing....I never finished reading them and just declined those.

I have thought occasionally about making some weird condition like, "Please don't wrap your books in inside-out frozen dessert boxes--it might lead me astray and make me want sugar." LOL (Yeah, I've actually gotten a few books wrapped in frozen dinner cartons turned inside out. The Lean Cuisine ones are okay cuz those are gross and wouldn't tempt me at all, but the chocolate brownie one set me to salivating.)

:-D

I got a book wrapped in a Godiva bag. It was very well wrapped but I was disappointed to see it was from PBS when I pulled it out of my mailbox.

I've seen RC's requesting that the book have no creases in the spine, or  that the books be in new or near mint condtion, or that the book not have been near animals or smoke because of the requester's potentially deadly allergies. I turn down the crease and allergy RCs.  I think asking for new books is silly, but sometimes that is what I have. So if the book meets that condition, I will send it, and have never had any complaints concerning "newness."

The only condition I have (and I use it only occasionally, when a book might have been used as a textbook) is that there be no writing or highlighting on text pages. I get turned down a lot and have been told I am being silly myself. Obviously, I disagree. ;-)

I got one similar to one above where she wanted 'near new books' because she sent out only near new books, and no creases on the spine, and some books have a small picture on the spine (this one did) and she wanted that picture to be in pristine condition.  Well, as there were about 3 creases in the spine and the picture wasn't pristine, I declined the request.  Pat

Understandable because of allergies but still weird - please do not mail in empty food boxes such as cereal boxes due to severe nut allergies. It's good she has this condition though b/c I know a lot of people here use empty cereal boxes.

I don't know if it's exactly strange, but I got one that asked the book not smell of several things and then followed with "or any other odor"...well..to me an ODOR is something that has an UNPLEASANT smell..I should have immediately clicked that it didn't meet the RC because I got burned on that one.  Totally a lesson learned.

I have gotten a couple with long lists of demands.  I turned down both because I was worried that I would have missed something and they would have demaned their credit back.  The strangest RC I have ever received was "Unless you would pay $3 or $4 dollars for this book in a used bookstore, then don't send it."  I also turned down that one because it was so subjective.  Ironically, I had paid $3 for the book at a used book store.

I turn down the no-smells ones as well.  They are too subjective and to me all books have a funky smell from the paper and glue.
