I requested a book on 1/8/08, and it's listed as mailed on on 1/13/08.

The USPS tracking number yields this message:

The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on January 11, 2008 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.

It's not officially overdue yet, but I'm curious as to what's going on.  If it had been mailed, wouldn't the tracking say that?

Could it be that it has been mailed, but hasn't been (won't be) scanned until delivery?

It is not delivered yet is all you can get from that information. Since the Delivery Confirmation is often not scanned until actual delivery, that could be all that you ever see even when the book is enroute.

This message means that the DC barcode has been generated and is recognised by USPS's computer, and is attached in USPS' system to a particular delivery address.  The barcode has not been scanned yet.

You will see this message every single time you track a  barcode that has not been scanned yet.  It is the same message for DC you buy at the PO.

When someone buys DC they are NOT buying tracking.    They are buying delivery confirmation.   Most of the time those books are not scanned except at delivery and that's all that is required.
