I had a book on my WL. When I was offered it, I accepted and then waited for the other member to mail. This person  posted the book, and today (it almost timed out) the book can't be mailed because the person said they can't mail it out as they need to read the author again before they think about doing so. Does that seem a little strange? You posted the book so why was it posted in the first place? I doubt this happens often but this left me scratching my head? Has anyone else ever heard of this reason before?

I've seen someone say their book wasn't received for the same kind of reason, but it's not a good reason to 1) mark a book mailed that wasn't even ready to be mailed and 2) not let you know it was late going out, or 3) not send it at all.

I'd let TPTB know what the sender did, and they can look at your PM's and see what the sender said. Then they can send them an email explaining, officially, why members can't do that here.

If TPTB don't send her an email, then at least you've notified them about how the sender is using the site incorrectly.

I don't want to complain, I received my credit back. I just thought it odd to post a book, the before the time out you say you can't because you have to reread the author again. It seems like it shouldn't have been posted to begin with. Just something that struck me as odd.

I would check to see if they are a brand new member. I have often found that new members can be overwhelmed when their books turn out to be wish listed.  They can post a bunch of books, thinking to get the ten needed, and then find out about wish lists.

Ahh, good point! Maybe it isn't so strange after all! I never thought of that!

Well, he's been a member since 2007 and he specifically mentioned he can't trade his Doss books yet until he rereads them. he has 2 different Doss books on his bookshelf. Should I PM him and let him know they're there so he can remove them? He probably forgot he has them on his bookshelf. I've only been on for 3 months and I can't remember what's on my shelf!!

It's possible that he had them on his bookshelf on hold and accidentally took them off hold.  Then realized they weren't ones he was ready to mail yet.  This is part of the reason why I don't put books on hold on my bookshelf.  If I'm not ready to mail it out, I don't want to see it on my shelf.  But some people do use that feature and it could have just been an accident.

Also membership date doesn't mean he ever did anything with the site.  He could have signed up years ago but only just started using it.

Personally, I wouldn't He posted a wl title he wasn't ready to mail. He may not be ready to send the others either (He probably wants them on his bookshelf so they will work their way up the que) He's been around long enough to know how things work and is likely ignoring the rules because it suits him. In my experience telling people things they don't want to hear is more trouble than than it's worth.

I'd probably respond to the "can't mail" message with something like "Thanks for letting me know! Just an FYI, you do have a few more books by that author on your Bookshelf, if you aren't ready to part with them yet you might want to put them on hold or remove them so another requester isn't disappointed when you need to cancel."

Nice wording Melanie.  And a polite nudge in the right direction.

Per terms of membership, members agree to mail out books they post in a timely manner.  If they cannot or are not ready to mail, the books should not be on their bookshelf for request.
