Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan.  If you've had the misfortune of seeing the movie, erase it from your memory as it had very little to do with the books. The books are great, the movie was horrible.

The Looking Glass Wars trilogy by Frank Beddor.

The Walking Man series by Mo Hayder.  I don't know that they're listed here as being a series, so this is the order

1) Birdman, 2) The Treatment, 3) Ritual, 4) Skin,  5) Gone.

Seconding The Dresden Files.

I love the "All Creatures Great and Small" series by James Herriot. He was an English country vet during the 40's - wonderfully written, humorous, true stories of animals and fascinating people. I'm re-reading through these for the third or fourth time. :-)
