I can see if it happens every once in awhile to check and be sure that "media" was being sent, but every package of books I've gotten in the past 2 weeks have been slit open by the PO to verify!! wth?

I get this ALL THE TIME and it's never resealed or marked that it was inspected.  I'm really starting to get pissed off.

Michelle R.: if they're just slit open and not marked, it's probably the machinery that's doing it. It can make surprisingly neat slices in the sides of packages, and (in theory, at least) PO employees are required to mark clearly that they inspected a package.

Maybe there's a sorter in your regional depot that's got a sharp bit sticking out?

I got one a long, long time ago that was opened, accidentally by poor packaging or the over-zealous equipment, while in transit.  The book was put into a clear plastic bag by USPS and they left a very big notice inside the bag telling me why it was opened.

I have had 4 DVDs from Netflix destroyed. 2 came in pieces in my mailbox, 2 others were cracked badly. I assume it was the sorting machines.

I've never had a package opened in any transaction since I joined here and started using Media Mail.

Media Mail can be opened due to people mailing stuff that is not media .

DMM 173.2.2 Postal Inspection

Media Mail is not sealed against postal inspection. Regardless of physical closure, the mailing of articles at Media Mail rates constitutes consent by the mailer to postal inspection of the contents.

Netflix honestly needs to rethink their packaging materials, those flimsy paper wrappers take a beating when the machines sort them.Of course the DVD's crack easily in this bitter cold weather we are having here too.

As stated above, media mail is subject to inspection to see if it qualifies for the rate. Too many people are claiming media rates for all sorts of items. There is a push within the post office to check more packages. It should be marked and resealed after inspection. If the package does not contain all media mail, it is sent postage due. If you are getting packages that are unsealed, report to the local post office or postal inspectors. Local post office can watch to see if is being opened before it arrives to be delivered or after delivery.
