Getting and RWAP book from a new member or an old member? I just received a book today ( mailed late, but not the point) with

1- a ripped, taped up cover

2- water damage and water stains

3- mold

I send a PM, go to look at the profile, and see she is a long time member. I had kind of wished it was a newbie- at least then there would be some excuse. This person should have totally known better. i am just hoping for a non snarky response.

oh- and it was a WL book- and I had waited over a year for it. Sigh.

I think I have more problems from long term members with the "we used to just care about getting books to read" attitude than newmems. I put my money on an "it wasn't like that when I sent it" answer.

My money is on the classic "I received it that way myself" excuse.

Definitely worse to get a book like that from a long-time member.

I'm going for the "I received it like that and it was good enough for me" excuse.

The worst books I have gotten have been from long time members.  2 were from what looked like PBS charter members from 2005.  One gave me the "I got it this way (nasty brown stains) and I didn't complain" and the other gave me "well I guess you better not read it then and don't ever order a book from again"-that one was almost split in 2 with pages falling out.

Old members for sure.  Happened to me a couple of times.  Just because they've been here a while doesn't mean they follow the rules.

I don't know....

...when I've received a RWAP book from a long-time member I'm usually met with a ready return of my credit, but the only snarky response (to date) I've received regarding a RWAP was from a new member.  She didn't think she was obligated to resolve the problem because the water damage was hardly noticeable and the book was in otherwise great condition.  I just hope she meets with others who are willing to mark unpostables RWAP.  Otherwise, she's never going to learn.

I hope you get a decent response, Rachel.  And that you get put back in in first place on the WL.

And let's not forget 'this is a used book site, don't be such a picky b!#@&"

Here's hoping the situation is resolved with civility :-)

I hate getting RWAPs in general, but when its from a long time member it just gets a lot harder for me to entertain the idea that it might have been done in error. That may seem unfair, but I figure if you've been here for a few years you should know what constitutes postable and unpostable condition.

In reading these comments, it makes me wonder if many of the old time members ever checked out the forums.  I wonder what percentage of the membership is even aware of the forums.

My experience ....

from newbies, you get cheeto fingerprints. I've gotten 2 different books from 2 different newbies that way. Blech!

from oldies, you get water damage and mold. Cause that's how they got the book.

The forums have nothing to do with it.  If you can't take the time in 4 or 5 yrs to snoop around the site-it's no excuse for not following or knowing the rules.  It tells you when you are posting a book that is had to be free of stains and liquid damage.

This is why I tell people to always mark RWP even if you aren't going to ask for your credit back.  It helps cut down ont he members who go years sending out bad books and then getting ticked off when they finally get called on one.

Credit return success- and only slightly snarky, so I can take it.

I am refunding your credit.

The book did not have water damage, stains or mold when it was put into the mail. Though the cover is taped to reinforce the areas that were getting worn most, there is no PBS condition that says the cover cannot have tape on it.
All books eventually have a "last read." I'm sorry that what I consider a last read is not what you consider it to be.

In 2 1/2 years, this is my first RWAP. I had a knot in my stomach when I did it- no one likes confrontation, even cyber confrontation. I considered just eating the credit- but I feel better now. Especially since I didn't even have to send photos- my next step.
