When a book is mailed with pbs tracking, how long does it take for the little truck thingy to show where the book is????  I ordered a few books and they are being mailed with tracking. When I checked it just says that the po was notified about the package,  The books were mailed  on the 2nd  ( from 2 different people) just thought they should be showing something by now.

If a book does not have tracking does it show as being delivered when you click on details??

Bertie- the truck is for entertainment purposes and doesn't always accurately reflect where a book is.  Click on the Details button to check and see if there have been any scans completed.

I often mark mine mailed while I'm logged on printing the postage.  I have everything laid out, print the label, tape it up and walk out the door and stick in the mailbox.  Unless I fall and break my leg between the printer and the mailbox, it's mailed.  I see no reason for logging back in and marking it mailed after I physically put it in the mailbox.

Bertie,

Delivery Confirmation is proof of delivery and the post office doesn't have to scan the book when they receive it. Most of the time books are scanned as soon as they make it to the post office but sometimes a book is only scanned when it reaches its destination. So the fact that there's no information yet doesn't really tell you anything.

Also, a lot of members mark their books mailed before they go to the post office (per the rules books can be marked mailed 2 days before actually being mailed) so it may be that this person marked the book mailed, put it in the blue box, in their car, purse etc to take it to the post office, etc. and haven't been able to mail it yet. Or it may be that it's already in the post office but the post office hasn't scanned the book.

LOL, Brenda. I do something similar. I mail my books from work so I mark them mailed just before I put them in the USPS outbox. But USPS picks up the mail at around 3pm so if I put the books there in the morning it may be a few hours before the books are actually picked up but in my mind, they are mailed.

Tracking details haven't been showing up on my details page for books that I have mailed between 12/30 and yesterday. If I plug the tracking number into usps.com it actually shows where the last scan has been. I have notified feedback of the problem but so far no response. It's a pain on swapadvd waiting for extra credits to post, let me tell you. It's happening on both sites.

LOL I am the same. I mark mailed as soon as I print the wrapper because the outgoing mail box is straight across from my desk at work so unless someone trips me over in the 4 feet it takes to get to the box. Its mailed..

Some post offices scan everything and others do not. Mine got into trouble a few months back and they are now told to scan everything. So thats the PO I use..

Delivery confirmation is not tracking, and as budgets are adjusted 'enroute' DC scans are becoming less and less common.  Tracking is an entirely different USPS service.

If the sender prints DC and purchases counter postage, the DC is scanned as part of the purchase transaction.  Otherwise, IIRC local post offices are actively discouraged from scanning incoming DC b/c they are considered unnecessary at that point (and time is money).  The most common scans are enroute as packages pass through the major sorting centers, but even these are becoming less frequent and in the last 6 months I've had alot of Media Mail travel coast to coast and only be scanned at the destination PO.

PBS members that use printable postage and blue box, often will not see a scan until delivery.

You have 48 hours from the time you mark the book mailed to actually mail the book.  That is the grace period allowed.  If you do not mail within 48 hours and someone fills out the survey and the postmark indicates such, you'll get a note from the team.

The system doesn't seem to be updating the tracking on packages mailed TO me with DC, but the ones I mailed out are up to date.  The book coming to me with DC doesn't show any scans at all on the PBS page, but if I put the number in at usps.com, it shows several scans from last week and yesterday and that it was delivered this morning.

I'm kind of wondering why you are even bothing to check on them when they were just mailed within the last 2 days.  I never look at that stuff unless a book is about to go lost. It'll get here when it gets here.

I once took my book out the the mailbox for pick-up on a Saturday. Our mail carrier didn't pick it up. Left it in the box and put our delivered mail on top. I decided to put it in the outgoing mail at the office rather than risk leaving it for carrier pick-up again. Caused a two-day delay in mailing. :P

why would you mark it mailed before mailing it anyway, unless you were on the way to the mailbox or PO right away?  Does anyone know why the system allows that?

Yup, I know why they allow it. Cause how would PBS know when you actually mailed it, in order to stop you from marking it mailed "too early"?

Anyway, I always mark mailed the night before I go to the Post Office. I have a system and I find it works perfectly. I mail books only on Sunday, so that is the earliest mail date that I ever pick. (sometimes I pick later dates even though I know I am going on Sunday). Then I wrap up my books on Saturday night and mark them all mailed. Then I take them to the PO physically on Sunday just like I said I would. Frankly, I don't give much thought to anybody out there who is overthinking the mail date (Sat) with the postage date (Sun). That's kind of crazy, to me.

My print, wrap and mail system completely prevents me from ever printing out a double wrapper, too. I print the wrapper of the first book on the tab, wrap the book, mark it mailed (book moves to different tab),  and then do the new "first" book on the tab. Completely impossible to print out the same wrapper twice. And when you have a stack of 10 or 15 books to mail out, printing out the same wrapper twice is not as impossible as it may seem when you are only mailing one or two books.

Doesn't anybody else remember the time only a couple of months ago when PBS was down for most of the day? Good luck trying to mark books mailed on an urgent timeline when they decide to do site updates with no notice.
