Do you put the start date 2-3 days before you are acually leaving?

Like Molly said it's up to you. I usually do it a few days before so I don't have to worry about a last minute book request.

I haven't done it but I'd agree with Molly and Mary. Put your account on hold ahead of time so you don't get a last minute request that you weren't expecting.
