At first, I thought Patterson had finally lost it and decided to try his hand at science fiction. However, as I read further, this realistic-fictional story became a page turner rather quickly. The questions this story raised in my mind about the manipulation of human DNA to serve an evil purpose, not only made my skin crawl but forced me to bring this possibility to a conscious level for which I'd rather not. This story made me think while it kept me on the edge of my seat.
A widowed veterinarian and a renegade FBI team don't know that they're on the same team. She's trying to find the strange girl she saw in the woods, the one with arms like wings. He's looking for the law-breaking doctors accused of unorthodox genetic testing. But the little girl in the woods isn't going to be found without a fight. And she isn't the only one with wings.
My mom first told me about this book. She liked it well enough, although she doesn't go in for the science fiction and fantasy so much. Also, James Patterson has rewritten the series for young adults, making Max and her five feathered friends the heroes. I think I might like that idea a little better. It was an interesting enough story but too many other aspects seemed to cloud the main plot. Yeah, we all feel bad about Kit's family dying in a plane crash but at what point does that make a difference to the plot?
There's a second book but I've been told it's just more of the same: running from the bad guys, the kids flying and being beautiful. Probably not going to bother. I might take a look at the young adult version...
