Could be classified as History (or even Travel), but the land itself is so present in the essays, even those later ones specifically dealing with the people of the region. I had trouble holding interest at a couple of points regarding scientific/technical issues, but overall not as dry as I'd feared when I picked up the book. Last couple of essays are rather pessimistic on the culture and nature fronts, but worth it for Hazleton's solid, objective writing.
