Just lamenting, because I feel like I'm going through withdrawals, but this is the longest I've gone without playing in a swap (apart from the HSRVB) since I started playing in the Games forum, at least 2 years ago.  There are a TON of erotica swaps, but what happened to the swaps for romances?  Just wondered if anyone else has noticed a big drop-off in the swaps for the romance genre and misses them as much as I do.

Why don't you host one yourself?

I just recently started posting in the Den of Sin chat room and I noticed they do a LOT of erotica swaps.  I honestly have never participated in any of the games or swaps, so I haven't really paid attention.

I kinda would like to do a swap, but I'm so ignorant of how they work, and from what it sounds like, they are VERY addicting and I already spend way too much time on PBS!  LOL

I've been thinking of hosting a newbie swap....if there's any interest, I'll host it. :)

DOS members are all erotica readers so most of the swaps posted in the DOS chat are about erotica. :)

I think some hostesses who do romance swaps (Pamela, Mary and others) aren't hosting much anymore. I think the last romance swap I participated was Beth's in March.

Oh I know - I meant that, hearing about all of the erotica swaps from DOS, it made me check out the games & I saw how many there were.  If that makes sense!  lol

I might be up for a newbie swap, depending on what type of book.

DG, I'm not a newbie, but I'd love to play in your newbie swap. (regular romance swap would be nice too wink)

Oh yeah, Michelle, the swaps are def. addicting (I have a swap notebook, to keep it all organized)

A need for a romance swap, hmm?  Gee, I wonder if I should put in for one?

Give me a few and I'll run it by the other mods for approval.  I agree, a good basic romance swap is needed!

Oh bless you Ani!  Hey, let me know if you're down this way for Oktoberfest this year, I'll buy you a beer to show my appreciation!

The thing with newbie swaps is that you can't make them genre specific...well you can, but then you'll get a lot less people. :)

How do swaps work here? I've done tons of scrapbooking swaps in the past, but never books. If someone would host a romance swap I'd join in. My only issue would be what kind of romance as there are a few types I don't read.

I'd love to try though :)

Cindy, You should go to the Games forum.   There are red sticky threads at the top of the forum that explain how the games are played.  Most are your basic elephant swap games  - very similar to the White Elephant or Dirty Santa games that many of us have played at Christmas, except played virtually.     It may seem complicated from the description in the red sticky threads, but they are really very simple and easy to get used to if you just "jump in".    Everybody is very welcoming in the Games forum and we're all there to have fun!

My guess is that Ani will make this a general romance swap, with very few restrictions on the books except that they be romance.   There is an element of risk and chance in every elephant swap game.    You play for the fun, and for the chance that you will end up with a great book.  But there is always a chance that you will end up with a book you've already read - or one that you don't want to read.  It's a chance we all take when we enter a game.   But if that happens, you just post the book when you get it.     It pretty much evens out and you still had the fun of playing the game!

I do read a lot of romance.  Maybe they jsut aren't getting enough people to join the games that people have stopped hosting them.  I know for me, I just don't feel like hosting any games lately.  And I really only do WL swaps or swaps where we provide a TBR or bookshelf to choose from. Everytime I do a swap with no WL requirement and no maximum posted limit-I end up with a book I've read or own already that has 200 copies in the system. So I just don't do them anymore.  I have no problem getting a heavily posted book I haven't read yet-but I have massive amounts of books already and I just don't need another heavily posted book especially if it's just going to collect dusst. At least with a WL swap, if I get a book I've already read, I won't have to wait months on end for it get ordered.  I don't really read the little series romances much so I haven't joined the last couple of those.

I might do another Bodice Ripper swap.  But it always seems like I'm begging for participants.  I'm kind of burned out on games in general.

But anyway-my post was meant to suggest that maybe there aren't that many general romance games being hosted because people mostly want the WL swaps.

There are 2 virtual boxes that trade romaces: the Historical VB trades a lot of romance and then there's the Heart Shaped Box for contemporaries.

I've been in the HSRVB for awhile now and really like it.  Cindy, if you want to just get your feet wet in the games forum, this would be a great place to start!  The virtual boxes are different from the elephant swaps, as there is no stealing or anything like that.  You just put books into the box for other people to choose, and then you choose something else that someone else put into the box when it is your turn.  There is always the chance that if you see something in the box you want, that someone else will take it before it's your turn, but at least in the HSRVB everyone is really nice about trying to put books back into the box  after they've read them if others are interested in them.

I also heavily prefer the WL swaps, but at this point I'd be happy for any romance swap.

Edited to add, we're between rounds in the HSRVB right now, so it would be a great time to join!  The link to the thread is in my signature.

Yes, sorry, it's the Heart Shaped Romance Virtual Box (see the link in my signature).  It used to be for contemporary romances only,  but since the new rule for VBs took place (regarding credit deposits and having the moderated/unmoderated option), it has been expanded to include other romance genres, such as paranormal, historical, etc.

Yayyyy, thanks Ani!

This is a great opportunity to get started with games, so if you've ever thought about it but were afraid to try, give this one a shot!  The seasoned players are always great about helping those who are new to the games, and it's not hard once you get the hang of it.

Ok, I might have to jump in on this one, but I have a question.  I sent a PM to Ani about it, but maybe someone else can answer here.  In the game/swap description, I see "books" mentioned (as opposed to 'book').  Does that mean people can swap more than one, or am I reading that wrong?  If they can, how does that work?  I was assuming you sent a credit to join, then each person swapped one book.  I've never done a swap before, though, so I don't know how it works and I may not be understanding.

I want to know what I'm getting in to before I sign up... lol

Michelle, you can offer more than one book but you don't have to.  A lot of people offer a choice of books with their reveal, for example Book A OR Book B, and then the receiver can choose which book they want.  There have also been in the past people who offer multiple books (book A AND book B), but there was recently a change in the rules that every book put into a game must be backed by a credit.  So even in a game like Ani's, where she only requires a one credit deposit, that is assuming you are offering only one book.  If you wanted to give two books away, even if one is an unpostable, you'd have to deposit an additional credit.  All this said, it is still perfectly fine to offer one book only in the swap.

Give it a try- trust me, it's fun!  The games do tend to fill up though, so you might want to join before it's full.

LOL  The reason it said books was that I stole the rules from my last Harlequin swap!  I didn't proof read until Michelle said something but I've corrected it now.  And Michelle has joined!  Anyone else?

I'll run over there Ani... I'm only in 9 or 10 swaps right now... I'll be the Oldie but Goodie in your swap!

Hugs,

Kat Lady

I am planning on a WL Romance Swap once I get back from vacation.   I will be letting my usual suspects know.  I've just been so busy that I haven't had the time or energy to run a swap, and with vacation coming up, I didn't want to have to leave in the middle of the game.

Oh yay, Mary!  Your swaps are among my favorite, so can you put me on your "usual suspects" list?
