James Clavell is an excellent writer. From Shogun and Noble House, two of my favorites, to Whirlwind. Whereas Noble House weaves its tale around two weeks in Hong Kong, Whirlwind developes its storyline over twenty four days during the war in Afghanistan/Iran after the Shah has left in 1979.
