I agree with Robin M. This was slow and wordy. The plot- at least as far as the professionalism of the sheriff and his deputies- was less than realistic. I usually like Karen Robards work so I stuck it out to the end but skimmed through paragraphs at a time.

Sheriff Matt Converse is investigating a call about a prowler when he stumbles into his old friend, Carly Linton, who has returned to her small hometown to open a bed-and-breakfast. Carly isn't so happy to see him. She still remembers their one magical night at her senior prom. She also remembers Matt had avoided her ever since. Now Carly needs to decide whether to forgive Matt and be friends, or tell him what she thinks of him. But, she may not have a chance because someone is trying to kill her.

I usually love Karen Robards' suspense books, but I was bored with this one. It was just too slow and too wordy for me. I ended up skimming about 200 pages. The last 70 pages were actually pretty good. My rating: 2 Stars.

In Whispers at Midnight, Karen Robards doesn't dissapoint.
Carly comes home to Georgia from Chicago to start a Bed and Breakfast in her childhood home. She never guessed that her first love and used-to-be best friend, the town bad boy Matt Converse, would not only still be there but be the county Sherriff as well.

Ms. Robards takes us through the ups and downs of Carly, who can't decide if she wants to pursue Matt and risk getting her heart broken again or just stay as far away from him as possible. Matt is torn between his passion for Carly and his passion for freedom. He has been raising his three sisters since he was in in early twenties and his mother died. As soon as his youngest sister starts college, Matt is planning on hitting the road.

The suspense in the book is pretty far out there. It wasn't believeable to me at all, but I still enjoyed this book immensely.
