Who Moved My Cheese? is a sweet analogy about four different personality types and the process of acceptance. The story is designed to make the reader think about which personality type they fall under (Sniff, Scurry, Hem or Haw)and what kind of results each type received. It packed a lot of punch for such a short story!

I loved the tidbits of advice that were 'written on the wall' along the way:
Change Happens-They Keep Moving The Cheese
Anticipate Change-Get Ready For The Cheese To Move
Monitor Change-Smell The Cheese Often So You Know When It Is Getting Old
Adapt To Change Quickly-The Quicker You Let Go Of Old Cheese, The Sooner You Can Enjoy New Cheese
Change-Move With The Cheese
Enjoy Change!-Savor The Adventure And Enjoy The Taste Of New Cheese!
Be Ready To Change Quickly And Enjoy It Again & Again!-They Keep Moving The Cheese

Every once in a while a tiny gem appears and this book is one of them.

Change can be a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. The message of Who Moved My Cheese? is that all can come to see it as a blessing, if they understand the nature of cheese and the role it plays in their lives. Who Moved My Cheese? is a parable that takes place in a maze. Four beings live in that maze: Sniff and Scurry are mice--nonanalytical and nonjudgmental, they just want cheese and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Hem and Haw are "littlepeople," mouse-size humans who have an entirely different relationship with cheese. It's not just sustenance to them; it's their self-image. Their lives and belief systems are built around the cheese they've found. Most of us reading the story will see the cheese as something related to our livelihoods--our jobs, our career paths, the industries we work in--although it can stand for anything, from health to relationships. The point of the story is that we have to be alert to changes in the cheese, and be prepared to go running off in search of new sources of cheese when the cheese we have runs out.

Change is inevitable. Anyone who is having trouble digesting that statement would do well to read this point. The book's analogies may seem a bit juvenile, but sometimes the simplest way to explain things is simply the best way.

Personally, this book changed my outlook on life and how I handled things being thrown my way, forcing me to see the futility of fighting something far beyond my control.

If something in your life is about to change and you're hesitant about the situation, dedicate the one hour to read this book cover to cover. It is completely worth it.

I know that this book was distributed in hundreds of companies to their employees as a moral booster, and that (According to the prologue) it has changed lives, but I found the "Story" of two mice and two little people named "Hem and Haw" to be annoying. I didn't learn anything that I didn't already know (As far as accepting change and moving on in life after a major change). I was sorry I wasted a PBS credit on this one!

I read this book on the advice of my supervisor who raved about it. To say that I was disappointed was a huge understatement. Trying to make sense of the whole thing and stay awake was a significant challenge. Although many people have hailed this book as the new coming of personal time and work management as well as a life philosophy, I found it extremely boring and personally useless. I have read thousands of books in my life and this is one of the two worst books that I have ever read.

Several years ago the boss at a company I worked for gave a copy of this book to all the managers who worked for him. To him the allegory of mice who are upset that "their cheese had been moved" resonated in an industry undergoing dramatic change. To him it was a message replete with insight; that things change and we need to be able to adapt and change with the times. Unfortunately the book did not receive the kind of response he was hoping for. To those who worked for him the message appeared to be, "Shut up and stop whining just because someone moved your cheese." I know this wasn't the author's original intent, but under the circumstances, and given the nature of the boss, the bad message was inevitable. The moral of the story: This is a really good book about the nature of change and adaptation, but be careful about the subtext you may be sending if you give it to those who answer to you.

This book caused me to realize that change can be good. It allowed me to make significant changes in my life that were a long time coming - I just couldn't take the step forward to make it happen. Who Moved My Cheese got me where I am today in life and for that I'll always be grateful! I recommend Who Moved My Cheese to ANYONE whether it be for an individual or a team learning because at some point in life you'll use what you've learned and you'll have grown as a person.

Change is inevitable, but it doesn't mean workers should sit back and accept everything corporate America dishes out.

The story itself is cute. Two mice and two little people live near a maze filled with cheese. When the cheese is gone, the mice leave to search for more cheese. The two little people stay, hoping the cheese will come back. Unfortunately, when I got to the "discussion" part of the book, it was a let down. It was sort of like the wrap-up at the end of a talk show. The introduction does mention that you can stop at the end of the story and interpret its meaning on your own. From the back cover it states "Dr. Spencer Johnson will show you how to ... Anticipate change, Adapt to change quickly, Enjoy change, Be ready to change quickly again and again. That's false advertising because he doesn't "SHOW" you how to do any of that per se. You have to think of what "your cheese" is and figure out the rest. It was a quick read (not less than an hour as it states on the back cover) and enjoyable.

What a great book! It's a very quick read and can be applied to any change anyone may be facing (job, relationship, home, etc.). It is one long metaphor to how different personalities handle change (when someone "moves their cheese") and what things are effective and what things hold us back. I recommend this to everyone!

I will save you about 94 pages. Change happens and you have to deal with it. That's about the only positive message you can get out of this book. Presumably you are a grownup and should have learned this already, in which case even reading this has been a waste of time.

That's the good stuff about this book. The bad stuff is that this sliver of an important message is drowned in an artless, over-the-top excuse for a fable with all the subtlety of hitting somebody in the face with a brick. The author tries to instill the idea that not only you should accept change, but you should unthinkingly accept it no matter what, and if you don't, then it's all your fault. Never mind that the premise itself implies that the main characters are being screwed-with by some higher power. No, if you have a problem with change, whoever is forcing change on you has nothing to do with it at all and should be held blameless. And then this immoral fable is wrapped in another story of the fable being told, and that is just pure salesmanship at its most tedious.

Do not waste your time on this book. You can get all the important points from the many, many negative reviews of the book, which are plentiful and far more entertaining than the book itself. You should also seriously question what is wrong with anyone who says they like it. I would give this book a zero if it was possible.

A therapist recommended this book while our family dealt with a relative's addiction. We felt like the rug had been pulled out from under us. This book helped me realize that change is inevitable in life. One's response to change determines whether you wallow in self pity, anger, or inactivity or do you rise to the challenge. This isn't a deep book and it isn't meant to be. It just states the obvious!

"Sometimes we may act like

Sniff who sniffs out change early, or

Scurry who scurries into action, or

Hem who denies and resists change as he fears it will lead to something worse, or

Haw who learns to adapt in time when he sees changing leads to something better!

Whatever parts of us we choose to use we all share something in common. A need to find our way in the maze and succeed in changing times."

This is a quick read; a fun book that hits the target in explaining on we react differently to change and provides guidance on how to accept change.......In this changing world, I recommend it highly, to be read as a business book or for your personal life.
