A sometimes funny and often sad story of two best friends who go through several very trying experiences together during their adolescence. Told in the form of flashbacks, the story really depicts the love and seemingly forever loyalty that we often have with a friend in our teen years, just to have that friendship dissolve with time. Nice, quick read.

I first read GATE AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS by Lorrie Moore. I think it was probably recommended in Oprah Magazine. When I finished, I waited several days before posting it in the system, it was such a well written novel - the prose was unbelievable. But I did post it, and sent it on its way - and I immediately put every Lorrie Moore book on my wish list. This is the second of her books that I have read - and I can't wait for the next. She is so talented she should be declared a national treasure. I know I haven't told you much about the book - you can get that from Amazon.com - but as far as I'm concerned, any book by this author that comes your way - GRAB IT!!

There was way too much hype surrounding this as a must-read--- it's good but not THAT good.

This is a very well written book, very evocative of female adolescence.
