And think your book is lost, or the person mailed it late, or didn't mail it al all - this could be happening:

  • 11/26/2009 4:00 PM - Electronic Shipping Info Received - BROOKLYN,NY
  • 12/1/2009 5:50 PM - Enroute - JERSEY CITY,NJ
  • 12/4/2009 3:25 AM - Enroute - DENVER,CO
  • 12/5/2009 8:38 AM - Enroute - SAINT PAUL,MN
  • 12/5/2009 3:10 PM - Enroute - SAINT PAUL,MN
  • 12/6/2009 6:59 PM - Enroute - DENVER,CO

I mean, did the book visit its in-laws in Minnesota?  It's supposed to be going to Utah.

Eek!  At least it made it out of Jersey City. Jersey City has been a bit of a black hole for me lately, which sucks since all of my books coming and going go through Jersey City.

Maybe my book is traveling with it.  The sender marked it mailed from Virginia on 11/25 on its way to Pennsylvania.  Since then nothing has been scanned.  It guess could be sitting in the black hole in Warrendale, PA.  Seems like the post office has a lot of black holes.

I had one recently that wasn't scanned for about two weeks until it finally surfaced in Bell, CA.

I don't know what's been happening in Jersey City recently - all my books go through there, too.  I'm guessing personnel cuts and being slammed with nearly all of NYC and NJ's Christmas shopping.

Last May I ordered a book for my DGD which was shipped from NJ (I think).  As I was visiting them at the time, we started tracking it (she'd use DC), and it got to within 50 miles of my DGD and it was back in NJ and started all over again.  LOL.  It did finally get to her.  Pat

Actually, I don't think Jersey City gets all of NYC's mailstream. Mine are sort of evenly spread out between Jersey City, Brooklyn, and Bethpage as the first place of scanning, and those first scanned in the latter 2 don't send up in Jersey City afterwards...

Interesting.  Books on their way to me go through Bethpage reasonably often, but my outgoing mail nearly always goes through Jersey City whether it's been scanned here in Bklyn or not.

A couple issues with Jersy City...

It is a black hole.  I've had items with DC be scanned there and never leave.  Also, I read recently that the big Philly distribution center is closing and most of that mail will now go through Jersey City, so increased volume is going to cause problems.  Also, last time I went to my "good" postie, they said that all Media Mail from their office was now being sent directly to Jersey City.  So, for us, First Class mail still follows normal procedure but Media takes an extra trip to the hole. I've also heard that some facilities care a little less about mail sorting than others, as long as it goes out, they don't really care if it goes in the right direction.  That seems to be a Jersey City issue :(

Books don't get the chance to travel much. When they do, they make the most of it.

It seems like this has been happening quite a bit lately. I sent a package to a friend in Michigan and when I checked the DC it went from Arizona to Bell, CA first. Then it turned around and went to Denver and finally a couple of weeks later it ended up in Michigan. It used to be that the packages would leave Arizona and go to Denver.

It sounds like my luggage that United Airliines misplaced a couple of years ago.  That poor suitcase did more travelling than I have ever done.  It practically went around the world.

We on the west coast have a black hole too.  That's Federal Way, Washington.  My last book sat there for four days before moving.

I have a similar story for a book enroute to me here in NJ:

  • 12/1/2009 4:00 PM - Electronic Shipping Info Received - RIO RANCHO,NM
  • 12/4/2009 9:12 PM - Enroute - DENVER,CO
  • 12/8/2009 6:48 AM - Enroute - CAPITOL HEIGHTS,MD
  • 12/9/2009 12:41 AM - Enroute - GREENSBORO,NC
  • 12/9/2009 1:36 AM - Enroute - GREENSBORO,NC

No idea why it would go from MD down south to NC when NJ is north of MD...

Almost all of my incoming books come in via Jersey City, but so far only 1 has gotten lost, and since it didn't have DC I can't really blame Jersey City.  My outgoing books usually scan at Trenton, but I mail from the office which probably explains that.

Hi Katie, fellow Northwesterner!  My Media Mail goes through Federal Way also.  Although it may take a couple days to get processed I've never had one go missing there . . . Warrendale is the location that 'Media Mauled' my book

Bell CA is another Black Hole.  Packages from CA seem to take weeks to travel east.

I agree Valerie!  About 90% of the books I sent out go through Bell, CA  and once they arrive there it can take quite a few days for them to leave.

Maybe it wanted to go through a well run processing center. I love the St Paul facility. When my books used to go through there they'd just fly. Sadly, with the closings, my books have to go through IA and they are slower than molasses...in MN in December :)

Be thankful that it is being scanned.

I have 7 packages in transit since Nov and earlier this month and only one is showing up anything on the USPS tracking.

When I mailed something Priority from the PO yesterday, I was told it could take up to a week to reach it's destination.

Maybe, USPS should consider a sale and discounted prices for the holiday season seeing as their transit times are so off during December;)

I've been having trouble with my books getting scanned info as well.  Since the distribution center has shut down and moved, it takes forever for it to be scanned in.  Sometimes it doesn't happen.  I've had 2 books get scanned all the way to their destinations, be marked as delivered and the members never received them.  I'm so glad I bought PBS postage + DC.  I'm just hoping that once the holiday crunch is over, things will work better again.

I sent a pacakge to a friend, it went to Bell(Hell) CA, and then over to MN, down to TX, over to FL and then finally got scanned in AZ. YEs it went the whole way across the country to go basically ONE state over CA > AZ.

I currently have a book on the way from Seattle, WA.  It was mailed Nov. 26 and as of Dec. 10 has managed to get all the way to Federal Way, WA, a whopping 22 miles in only 2 weeks!  At that rate, I should have my book in approximately 4 years. LOL!

Sandy - at least yours has shown up as being in the mail system.  My 2 that I mailed about 10 days ago haven't even shown up as being in the system anywhere. :>(

Not too long ago I sent a book from here (N. Calif)  to Iowa ..... it went from here, down to the black hole of Bell, Calif over to Maryland, down to N. Carolina and finally it went back to Iowa.

It was the weirdest route I'd ever seen.
