Subject: Why do some books not show up on search?

Sometimes when I search for a book by it's title, it wouldn't show up, or if it's part of a multi-volume series some volumes wouldn't show up. However, if I were to look up the ISBN from Amazon or something and search for that, it shows up normally, and there is no typo or anything in the title to prevent it from being returned from the search. I'm searching for "All Books" so I know that's not the problem.

I can't answer that.  I've experienced that as well.  I've also found that when going through my different lists that "alphabetical" doesn't always insure that they are in alphaberitical order.  I find some listed by the letter of the first name or the middle name of the author.   I've found that the easiest way to find a book in search is to get the ISBN from Amazon if I know the author and/or title of the books.

The advanced search (under the "search menu) is more accurate  than the "soft search" (the search box at the top right corner of each page.)

I had that happen just the other day.  I ended up doing an amazon search and getting the ISBN and then it came up.

It's hard to give an example because every book I've done that for now shows up when I do a search for them - yes, I'm a bit weird that way - once I find a book from a seach I like to know it's going to be each time - LOL!

Or when you look at the list of books by an author (where titles in green are available and titles in red are not) and a book is supposedly unavailable but if you search another way it is?

There are plenty of different ways to search and somehow they each provide different results sometimes.  I've found plenty of books that didn't appear to be available at first but upon closer inspection were actually lurking in the system.  I don't have a reason, but I know it happens.  Once you get the hang of the different means of searching it becomes the most fun just tracking down odd titles or rare editions, like hunting literary treasure.

I search by author, variations of the name, key phrases relating to the title, fragments and mispellings of the title, category searches, publisher searches, ISBN (I use ISBNDB.com to check for those)...I can't think of any other ways but there are plenty.  Even here it's like Google where you have to ask the right questions to get the result you want.  When you do get the results I hope it's as fun for you as it is for me!

I had one once that I was looking for under the authors FULL NAME and it was listed at PBS under her LAST NAME only, so she never showed up, but when I entered an ISBN for that particular book, there it was.

I've had that happen on more than one occasion, where neither the author or title will come up, but when I put in the ISBN there it is.

I have also had problems searching for books here at PBS-

- So, I go to other sites to find the actual ISBN and come back to PBS to search by ISBN -

Favorite search sites :

FetchBook - New & Used Books - Find the Lowest Price

 Book Finder4U

BookFinder.com: Search for New & Used Books, Textbooks, Out-of-Print and Rare

Amazon.com: Used Books: Health, Mind & Body, Parenting & Families, Cooking, Fo

I keep these links in my favorite places list ( bookmarks) right below my PBS link

I believe those lists of other books by authors is sensitive to *any* variation in the name, i.e. "Lisa Jackson" would different from "Lisa  Jackson"  (1 vs 2 spaces between the names).  So differences in capitalization, first initial vs first name, inclusion of a middle initial or name, etc.  Each variation wil have it's own list.  There is a probject to get the names standardized, see "Approve Book Authors" link at the bottom of the page, and a "directions" link on the page it takes you to.

I was noticing that the basic search wasn't as efficient as it used to be.   I've keyed in a title and no book was found with that title, then keyed in the ISBN and its found or keyed in the author's name and have only one book option turn up when the author is prolific and has many books in the system.   I don't remember the search option being so fussy in the past, but I could be wrong:lol:

If I can't find it via title, I will often search by author's name, it seems to be more reliable.

Can you give some examples? It happened on a number of different searches, but the only ones I can remember seem to have cleared up.
