I have noticed this a few times, While searching for a new or upcoming book from an author, I type in the authors name and then click on the name to get the list of all the titles. The book I am looking for is not on the list anywhere. When I search for the book by the ISBN it comes up, so it is in the system.

The most recent search was for the last two Jude Deveraux books. The book list looks like she hasn't wrote a book since 2007.  nowhere on the list is her last two books- published this year.

I have noticed this with some other authors as well.

Kind of on the same topic, why do some books show up at the bottom of the list with no year next to them? another author that I look up alot looks like she hasnt written a book since 2005, but some (not all)  of her newer books are on the list at the bootom with no year.

The format of the author's name has a lot to do with that. If it is formatted even slightly different, it doesn't come up if you click on the author's name for a listing. There has been a lot of work done to fix this going on, but it will take some time to get all those authors names cleaned up. If you want to help, click on the Approved Book Authors at the bottom and work on the next author :)

That is weird....Line of Fire just doesn't show up under Franklin W. Dixon even though the name is the same.  I have no clue as to why.

I even copied and pasted the author name and its spelled and punctuated and spaced in the exact same way.  That is a puzzler.

I've had this happen to me quite a few times.  Usually I just copy and past the ISBN of the book I'm looking for from BN or Amazon and then it usually pops up.

Make sure you are searching "all books" rather than just posted books.

Probably the listing was created by a member who did not have all the info or did not care to fill it in.  When you create a listing you can do so with very little data.  If you see that, you can edit the listing by clicking on "edit book data" at the bottom of the page.

I've noticed that the same thing happens with books published in the U.K. If you search by author or title, they don't show up. But if you type in the actual ISBN number, the book IS in the system.

Cindy, great news! It has been several months now that we have been able to edit the PBS assigned ISBN books. It's possible that some of the VERY early ones (only 3 digits) cannot be edited, I believe someone had a problem with one recently, but all the 4-6 digit ones can now be edited, as well as images added. This was an awesome addition to the database cleanup abilities, and greatly appreciated when it was introduced.

As for some books not showing on an author's listing, even when the name is exactly the same, none of the programmers have been able to explain that phenomenon to us. Eventually (years?), the Approve Book Authors project will gather them all together and correct all the little weird problems, but it will be quite a while before we get them all done :)

O.K. I'm going to go out on a limb and showing just how Tech ignorant I am, with this silly question.

Just out of curiosity... The system wouldn't register "spaces" after the author's name would it? So for example,

J.K._Rowling_ compaired to J.K._Rowling. (_ are spaces). It's not that sensitive right?

No, it's not that sensitive.  It actually removes punctuation when you do a search, so that if you search for "(Rowling)" it will search for "Rowling".

I see all this controversy in this thread, and there are actually two different subjects here, and some folks think that the other person is talking about the author's list, when I am pretty sure that they are not.

The system has some quirks with the search.  I can copy a title and author from the PBS listing into the search and the search will say that there is no such listing.  However, when I search by ISBN, I have always been able to get these problem listings to show up.  I have no explanation.  The only solution I have come up with is that if there is a book that you can't find, go to another site to get the ISBN and search with that.  If that doesn't yield a listing, only then I would say that it is not in PBS.

As for the author's list, it is an area of consternation for me also, but I think that Sherry gave the best answer that we have right now.

Books showing up with no year:  That means that there is no year of publication in the listing.  If you know what the year of publication is (you have the book, for instance), edit the listing.

I did a search for Jude Deveraux and sorted by year of publication (descending) and got all the recent titles plus one yet to published (due for release in 2009).

When the spaces are where you put them, Kris, there's no difference, but I believe (at least in Rowling's case) there is a difference between "J.K._Rowling" and "J._K._Rowling", where I believe the latter is the correct version.
