I just did some research, and it's a  bit of a puzzle.  It looks as if both titles exist.  Usually in a case like this, there's a clear indication that there was a pre-publication title change, and some sites are still showing the old (never published) title, while some are showing the new one.  That's not obvious at all here, but it could be the case.  Also, sometimes this happens when the U.S. and U.K. titles are different.  The authors' website shows only "The Search."  I suspect that the story is the same for the titles -- the descriptions sound similar.

So either both titles were issued with the same ISBN, or one title was actually published, and the other wasn't.  (Or one of the ISBNs is a misprint.)  Hard to tell at this point.  For the time being, if someone has the book "The Search" with this ISBN, they'll have to post it without an ISBN, since the title on their book doesn't match our listing.  If you get more info on this -- if you decide to contact the publisher, for example -- feel free to PM me.

I found all of these listed here on PBS, with the weird ISBN#'s.

Thank you, Patty P.    for the info.  And,  Lisa B.   I wonder how many books out there actually show up this way?

Tibben  Yes, I did know.  I guess weird might not have been the right word.  Just different.  I was half asleep when I posted that.

Lisa D. :  I found all of these listed here on PBS, with the weird ISBN#'s. ... I wonder how many books out there actually show up this way?
Lisa B. :  I'm not sure how many, but it really puzzles me. ?

PBS is an ISBN-driven site, meaning that all listings on the site must have an ISBN identifier. So all books posted without an ISBN are assigned a number by the PBS system to uniquely identify it. To simplify searches and record-keeping, PBS generates an arbitrary number and assigns it to the ISBN-13 field.  Each time a non-ISBN book is posted, PBS simply increments the pseudo-ISBN number by one.

As I write this, the most recent PBS-assigned "ISBN" is 442569. The next non-ISBN listing will be assigned 442570, and the next will be 442571. This means that currently 442,569 books are identified in the PBS system using a "short ISBN" number. And the number increases every day. :-)

Many, many books have been published without ISBN numbers assigned by the publishers, and each time one of these is posted PBS assigns a unique number to the listing to identify it. Therefore, a book that was published without an ISBN and that has been posted multiple times here by various members may easily have dozens of PBS-assigned "ISBN" numbers associated with it, even though they are all copies of the "same" book. These may be different editions and have the same or different publishers. The 442,569 books alluded to above, then, is the number of times books without ISBNs have been posted on the site, and not the number of unique titles that do not have ISBNs.
