Somebody in the Book Bazaar was offering a 4/1 deal. I picked out 8 books and ordered 2 of them (getting the other 6 free). I just got a PM from them saying that they only had 2 of the books (and only one of them was one I actually ordered off of their shelf). Instead of informing me, they cancelled the order for one of the books... so the order went to somebody else... who promptly accepted and printed it. This is at least the second time I've had this happen in a deal. The person shouldn't have cancelled my order like that, but there was nothing I could do about it. But couldn't PBS send me some kind of notification when I order multiple books from one shelf and one of them gets passed to somebody else? This is so frustrating. I can only hope that the person will be nice enough to cancel the order after they read my PM.

Glenda, if the person who now has the request cancels the order, they will loose their place in the FIFO line.

As per the help docs, if the book is canceled, or not marked mailed within 5 days:

If there is another copy of the book available:

  • your request will automatically be passed along to a new sender.
  • This will happen at the end of the 5th day  (in the middle of the night)
  • You will not get an email notifying you if this happens.

If there is not another copy of the book available:

  • the request will be canceled
  • you will get your credit back
  • the book will go onto your Wish List automatically.
  • You will get an email notifying you if this happens.

Maybe you can send that suggestion to the Team via feedback.  Not sure how that will fit in the current system - right now, the system is built around the FIFO system so it automatically gets you a copy of a book you request without taking into consideration the sender but who posted the book first. If the system also had to take into consideration the sender, maybe it would add another level of complexity to the system but it doesn't hurt to ask.

If it's happened to you more than once, then maybe you should tell people in deals to notify you first if they need to cancel. Probably these members that are offering deals are not familiar with PBS to know what happens when they cancel requests.

Gosh, I forgot about how it would affect the person in FIFO. I sent them another PM. I don't want to cause a problem for somebody else.

I guess it could get complicated if the system had to take deals into consideration. I guess I just wish I could be notified when my request gets passed on. Of course, this wouldn't happen if people in the bazaar would follow instructions.

I don't know about the first time it happened to me, but this time I checked. The person has been a member for a few years and  posts really heavily in the forums and has lots of books. Seems to me she should've known better.

I don't know good I thought posting about this would do. I guess I just wanted somebody to know the INJUSTICE of it all. LOL

Oh,well. I'm over it. At least it wasn't my only credit! :)

Next time when you PM about a deal, tell the other member that if they don't have the requested books to let you know before cancelling so you can either cancel on your end or pick out other books.

I got your request. The wrapper is printed and book is wrapped. If you had caught me before I printed the label, I would have canceled right away.

That's OK, Sue. I understand. It's not your fault anyway. :)

I hope you explained the proper procedure to the person offering the deal and explained how messed up things got because she just cancelled the request without giving you a chance to. Someone running deals a lot really needs to know they shouldn't be doing that.

Agreed.  anyone offering a deal that finds they don't have a book/books should tell the person and offer them another book from their shelf of the chance to cancel the deal since they don't meet the conditions of the deal they offered. That would be the polite thing to do.

Susan - if you have not yet mailed the book, you can contact the PBS Team and ask them to cancel this transaction without passing the request along to a new sender.

If I recall correctly, some time ago, maybe like a year or so, someone from PBS stated here in the forums, that they were working on a way to deal with orders that are part of a deal. I don't know if they've made any headway on the project, but sending in a feedback and asking wouldn't hurt. It would let them know (tho I'm sure they probably already do)  that there is still an ongoing problem with those who offer deals cancelling instead of having the requestor cancel which is what is listed in the rules & guidelines for doing deals in the red sticky topic. But, too many people are prone to just do things without bothering to read the rules on how things are supposed to be done, and just jump right in and figure right or wrong they are fine. It really is a problem, and happens all the time and is very frustrating. Please send in a feedback using the form found on the Contact Us page listed below under Company and tell them that you experienced this problem and you wondered if anything was being done to help with this problem. Like wheels, squeeky problems get the oil sometimes :)

Look like I spoke too soon. The form won't send. :(

Clearly the whole transaction was jinxed. LOL
