Araminta Surtaine will be 18 in two weeks, and free to control her fortune. Her guardian arrives to take her to her family home supposedly to sign papers that will transfer all control of her forutne. On the trip from London, Araminta awakes from a nap to overhear her guardian and his son plan her abduction and force her into marriage for control of her fortune. She decides to jump from the carriage, but lands badly and hits her head on a rock. When she awakes, she finds herself in a circus caravan, and cannot remember her name or what happened. Most fortunate that Lord Giles Bishton, on the track of a traitor, arrives at the circus in time to help.
