Maureen Swanson is the scourge of the neighborhood. The other kids know her as a hard slapper, a liar, and a stay-after-schooler. But Maureen doesn't care. She likes to imagine she lives in the old Messerman mansion. The house is crumbling now and rumored to be haunted, but still--life would be perfect if she were Maureen Messerman.
Then one day Maureen finds a way into this forbidden, boarded-up house. In the hall are portraits of seven young women wearing lavish gowns and haughty expressions. Maureen has something nasty to say to each one--too skinny, too silly, too ugh. But then she notices that the ladies seem to have shifted in their frames. She reaches out her finger to touch the paint--just to make sure--and touches...silk!
These seven daughters of privilege are colder and meaner than Maureen ever thought to be. They are wicked, wicked ladies, and Maureen has something they want....

I read this book back in the late 1960's over & over again when I was a young girl. It left such a lasting impression on me that to this day I can tell you just about the whole story!! I used to tell my daughter about it when she was a little girl but unfortunately we didn't have places like amazon.com & PBS to find old never-forgotten books! I have re-ordered this so that I can FINALLY share it with her, and she can in turn share it with her child when he's the right age for it. If you have a little girl that loves to let her imagination run wild, then you must get her this book!!
