Let me first say that, I am a huge Diana Gabaldon fan.  Has anyone read Into the Wilderness and sequels by Sara Donati?  I have had a lot of people tell me that they were as good as the Outlander series.  What did you think?

Mmmm... it's been too long for me to compare, but they're pretty good, anyway, and very likely to appeal to the same audience.

I read the first two.  I liked the first but couldn't even finish the 2nd.  And to me, NO COMPARISON to Gabaldon.  Sorry.

I have the first book, which I started awhile back and just couldn't get into it, so it went back to my TBR pile.  I'm a huge fan of the Outlander series, and got Into the Wilderness because Diana Gabaldon recommended it on her site, but to me, it just didn't compare (at least from the little I read, which I don't even remember now).  I debate about posting it every now and then, but keep thinking maybe I'll give it another try at some point.  I really need to finish the Outlander series first though- I'm 1/3 of the way through the 6th one now (plus am rereading Outlander for the PBS discussion group), so that will take awhile!

Claudia- there is a discussion group that started just last week, so you haven't missed much.  The official discussion thread is in the Hidden Gems forum, but from what I understand, most of the discussion last week was via one of the chat rooms.  I couldn't make it last week, so missed it- but some people have posted their answers to the discussion questions in that thread.  They are still adding people to the group, so check out that thread.  The next discussion meeting is today/tonight at 7PM Eastern, which makes it hard for us west-coasters who are still at work at that time!  The discussion tonight will be on chapters 6-10 and the discussion questions are posted at the beginning of the thread.

Anyway, I am also a diehard fan, and was SOOO happy to hear of the new book coming out, though I heard it would be next year (2009).  I haven't finished book 6 yet, so am trying to stay away from the excerpts from the new book that she posted on her site, though they are hard to resist!

Edited to add, look for the thread that is titled "Official PBS Outlander Book Club".  There is another thread in there about the Outlander book, but that's not the right one.

I've read them all. They are good, but not Outlander good. I enjoy wilderness/adventure type books and thats what I got them for. However, the characters and action is nothing like the Claire/Jamie saga of the Outlander series.

I really enjoyed the Wilderness series too - in fact Willa H. introduced this series to me with a gift of the first two books. :)

I would agree it's not quite as AMAZING as the Outlander series (which is my favorite of all time) however it still is really fascinating if you enjoy historical romance.  It is what they consider a family history - so in that regard it is similar to Outlander.  You also learn a great deal about the time, culture,  what things were like for Native Americans at that time - plus the characters are complex and interesting. I didn't fall madly in love with them the way I have with Jamie, Claire, Bree and Roger - but am really fond of The Bonner family and am investing in their story

Claudia - book 7 will be out in 2009, per DG's website.  There's a GREAT discussion group on Yahoo I'm a member of:  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OutlanderGathering

You would love it there!
