I know the wish list is changing to a different system - when is it coming?

I'm tired of using my reminder list as overflow and missing books as a result

SSSSHHHHHHHHH..... let's not hurry this along thanks.  I am so dreading the change, I hate it over at swapadvd I've been a member there since Nov and have yet to get anything off my WL.  If you want to know about the changes go over to the dvd site and read how it works there it will be exactly like that.

I am not eager to adapt to more change in my life.

A quote from my brother: "Funny to me how providers seem never to be satisfied with their product, when their consumers might be just fine.   ...Why do people view change as progress?"

I'm sorry but I have to say I hope never.  I just read the wish list info on DVD swap, and it sucks.  No FIFO on WL, instead you have to rank every blessed book and people with higher rank get the book first.  You earn "points" daily based on rank and yada yada... FIFO is better.  At least with FIFO you know that it goes down the line based on seniority and  nothing else, so someday, you WILL be offered the book.

Oh, I don't like that change at all. Why are they going to do it that way?

The details are in the Help Center under Whats New.

Saying there will be no FIFO is wrong. The new system will be mainly based on the FIFO system. The difference is that you will earn points on the books on you WL at a different rate depending on how you have the book ranked on your list. This may allow people to move up the WL lines faster on the top books they want the most, and pass people who do not have them ranked very high. Because you will still be earning points on all your WL books, you will still keep moving up in all the lines.

One of the benefits with the new WL is that there will no longer be a 200 book limit. Lots of people are looking forward to that. You will also be able to put individual books on your WL on hold, without losing the points you've already accumulated. This will help a lot of people that don't maintain a hogh credit balance or want to slow down their WL flow when they are getting too many. It may also encourage new members that come on, get 30 books they post requested and see they are no higher than 329th on any books they want. Giving them the hope of moving up on their #1 book faster might encourage them to stick around and keep postingmore WL books into the system.

You also will no longer be given a chance to purchase credits for a WL book if it becomes available.  You have to keep waiting.  That may be fine if the book is posted in often, but kinda bites if it's a seldom posted book.  I'm sorry, I'm not excited about this at all.  I think it's a matter of complicating something that doesn't need to be.  And having to rank every blessed book....

If a book becomes available and you do not have credits to request it, you will be "passed over" for the book and keep your position in line.

ETA: They are also doing away with the reminder list completely.  I use mine for books that are available now that I'm not quite ready to order.  I like being able to have them all in one place.  I know that if I go to the reminder list, I can order any of those books right now.  I don't want that to be combined with my WL...

I do understand the need for a longer WL, but not the rest of it.

This option is still available. If you don't have enough credits on hand, you simply put the book down as a "48-Hour Offer" rather than a "Auto-Request."

The FIFO will remain the same for things posted to your shelf, example if there are 10 copies of The Lovely Bones already in the system when you post yours you will be #11 for those ordering from the system.  Books on your WL are ranked, then according how long you've had it higher than everyone else wishing.  So if you've had Hot Six by Janet Evanovich on your list ranked at #2 for 4 months, and a newbie comes in and puts it at #1 eventually they will pass you by, even IF you end up in the #1 slot, being ranked #2 you aren't earning the same number of points per day as the newbie ranking #1.  Now imagine the books you'll have at 30, or 300.

The idea that only having 200 items on a wishlist as being so limiting boggles, the fact is if you have 1000 books on the new list, you can't list every book at #1, and book #1000 will have 999 people ahead of you.  I'm sure eventually someone will post the math equations that will makie it seem like oh you'll never be stuck in a perpetual no mans land, but I am not convinced I'll ever see anything off of that WL there, or here when it changes.  I've decided to give it a year, if by 12/01/08 I don't get anything I'll probably transfer my credits here and close that account.  I probably won't close my account here, but my thoughts on posting books will change.  I'll have to consider my need for WL credits vs trade in value at a UBS.

One thing that I will concede there that probably won't be an issue here is that I do believe there are DVD's listed that will never (or at least haven't yet) been placed into that system, I think movement on a WL in those cases is due to the fact that people get discouraged and take it off their list and just buy the darn thing.  I know this happened in one case for me, but the 20 folks behind me probably all got excited when they moved up the list, not realizing it was giving up not wish granting that caused it.  My current WL there, I have 7 things listed, 3 are at #1, 2 at #2, thsoe #1 have been there almost from the begining, and one of those I've been everything from 1 of 1 to 1 of 3, I am assuming the others behind me get discouraged and delete it from their lists, and new folks join.

If and when it happens here, I will probably take everything except those items I am already @ #1 for and those out of print or hard to come by off my WL, saving those precious high ranking spots for them, and not bother wasting ranking anything below a 10.  Not that I am convinced that will do anything but I don't have time to play around jockeying books in postions trying to second guess which books might move faster.... or not.

LIke someone else said, change isn't always progress, if it isn't broke don't fix it

I stopped swapping here because of the coming wishlist changes. I only keep my membership active right now so I can get news about the PBS cookbook.

I stopped swapping here because of the coming wishlist changes. And see, you could have had another year of uninterupted swapping had you not worried about what might happen when and if the change came about. I've had over 50 wishes granted just since the beginning of the year.

I wonder what the delay is? This is just a guess, but, it will take a lot of work and coding to get that type of system up and running on this site because it has such a higher number of memberships, very high number of books posted each day, and extreme number of books already WLed that will have to start out at points earning since the day they were WLed. The smaller, newer sights were easier to implement and they will function better at the lower volume (and as the site owners have said over and over, the WL system on those sites are not representative of what will happen at this site). They will want to know the system will work with minimal issues before ever going live here. Because of the size of undertaking, who knows, maybe they will never be able to implement it.

I think people are making too much of a big deal on this.  I joined Swapadvd a few months ago.  I've gotten several WL DVDS-some that had long lines and I didt not have them as #1.  In fact I put very little thought or effort into ranking them.  Plus you will get pts for books you currently have on your WL for the time they've been on there.

Be glad they aren't doing what Bookmooch does-when a WL book is posted they send out an email every so many hrs (2-4 I think) down the list. So basically it's the first person who gets the email and gets on that gets the book. So if you don't check everyday-you miss out on WL books.

I have to say though that I'm not looking forward to having the WL and RL combined. I don't see why they have to do that.  I have a long RL.  Most are books that I'm interested in but only if I get them in a BOB or a book deal.  They aren't books that I"m likely to just order straight out.

I'm sure I'll manage to get used to it eventually.  I'm just really change adverse about some things.

Goodness! I didn't realize that the reminder list would be done away with. Not only do I use it as a reminder list, I also use it to see how many books are in the system when I want to place a book on my bookshelf. Will there be another way in which to check to see how many books are in the system? I don't particularly like listing an older book with 25 or more in the system when it's not an often requested author or title. Will there be some kind of step by step procedure for "weighing" our WL by importance? Some of us are numerically challenged !

Huh?  I have about 450 DVDs on my wishlist over at swap-a-dvd, and on #s250-450 (roughly speaking) I'm the only one waiting for it, nobody ahead of me.

Even here on PBS, where they are many more members, it is fairly rare for a book to have more than a few people wishing for it (browse the club wishlist to see that) - though the world will look somewhat different to people who wishlist mostly recent releases by popular authors, etc.

I will very much miss the reminder list. Will they give us a warning before switching to the new WL so I can save a list of books from my reminder list or will those just be moved to the new WL and put on hold until I'm ready to request it?

Um... i am not sure i like the sounds of this but i guess i'll just have to see how it works in the end. Thank goodness i don't have many books WL'ed.

Not having a Reminder List will be a pain in the butt though. Will they implement other changes so that we can see how many books are in the system of a certain book or are we to be left in the dark?

I dunno.  My WL dvds seem to be coming in much more quickly than my WL books.  I currently only have 200 movies on my WL over at swapadvd, but I'm #1 for 68 of them.  Those 68 dvds are ranked lowest on my WL because no one else is ahead of me for them.   I kind of like the way the WL works over there.  It's different, but I don't see it as a bad thing.

I wonder what the delay is?

I am guessing here, but I think the delay is trying to fix what has been an ongoing issue with losing your place if a WL item goes lost.  Right now over at the dvd site, if you are at #1 and get your wish granted, and do not get your item, regardless of the reason, never mailed, or lost for example, you will be put back on the list, but it is possible that you will not go back to #1.  The reason being they have not figured out a way for the system to keep aquiring points for you once you've accepted the wish, so in if someone behind you moves to #1 and they are close enough in points, after a month of gaining points that you aren't getting they could actually have more than you.

confused yet?

Now I think in a few cases, members have asked to be put back at #1 and tptb did so, but I'm not sure if that is still the case or not, or if they do it across the board or only in a few cases.  Either way, can you imagine the ruckus here in a case like that?  In one case the person ended up I think 3rd or 4th in line.

Anyway that is my theory as to why it hasn't happened yet.   I will continue to hope they never find a fix for it if that is the case.

I'm guessing all that opposition to a new wishlist convinced the site managers to scrap the idea. It looks like we have a better chance of seeing the former Soviet republics reunify than getting a new wishlist system. That's not a bad thing however...the current system is efficient. I notice the lines don't move too slow. Some books take forever, but I just go to a library if it looks like I'll be waiting years to get  certain titles
